DAY 33 - 진실한 종의 행동 지침


"너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는
너희를 섬기는 자가 되고"
(막 10;43).

"그의 열매로 그들을 알지니
가시나무에서 포도를, 또는 엉겅퀴에서 무화과를 따겠느냐"
(마 7;16).



우리는 다른 사람을 섬김으로 하나님을 섬긴다.

세상은 위대함을 권력, 소유물, 명성, 지위의 측면에서 정의한다. 만약 우리가 다른 사람들에게 섬김을 요구할 수 있는 입장이라면 인생에서 성공했다고 생각한다. '나 우선(me-first)'의 정신을 강조하는 오늘날의 문화 속에서 종과 같이 행동하는 것은 인기 없는 개념이다.

그러나 예수님은 위대함을 신분이 아닌 섬김의 잣대로 측정하시다. 하나님은 우리의 위대함을, 다른 사람이 우리를 얼마나 섬기는가가 아니라 우리가 다른 사람을 얼마나 섬겼느냐에 따라 결정하신다. 이것은 세상에서 말하는 것과는 너무나 상반되 것이기 때문에 행하는 것은 물론 이해하는 것도 쉽지 않다. 제자들은 누가 가장 귀한 자리를 차지할 자격이 있는지를 놓고 다투었다. 그 후 2천년이 지난 오늘도 크리스천 지도자들이 교회, 교단 그리고 선교 기관 안에서 그들의 지위와 명성을 위해 엎치락뒤치락 하는 것을 볼 수 있다.

리더쉽에 관한 수천 권의 책이 쓰여졌지만 섬김의 도에 대해 쓰여진 책은 거의 없다. 누구나다 지도자가 되기를 원하지 종이 되기를 원하지 않는다. 우리는 장군이 되기를 원하지 사병이 되기를 원하지 않는다. 크리스천들도 '섬기는 리더(servent-leaders)' 가 되기를 원하지 그저 종으로 남기를 원하지 않는다. 그러나 예수님처럼 되기 위해서는 종이 되어야 한다. 왜냐하면 예수님이 바로 자신을 그렇게 부르셨던 것이다.

자신의 모습을 알고 하나님을 섬기는 것이 중요하지만, 그보다 더 중요한 것은 종의 마음을 갖는 것이다. 하나님이 우리를 자기중심적인 삶이 아니라 섬김을 위해 부르신 것을 기억하라. 종의 마음이 없이는 우리 자신의 유익을 위해 다른 사람의 필요를 돌아보지 않으려 하는 유혹을 받을 것이다.

하나님은 때때로 우리가 지음받은 모습이 아닌 다른 모습으로 섬길 것을 요청하셔서 우리의 마음을 시험하신다. 만약 우리가 구덩이게 빠진 사람을 보면서 "나는 자비와 봉사의 은사가 없어" 라고 말하는 대신 그를 그곳으로부터 꺼내주기를 하나님은 기대하신다. 우리에게 어떤 특정한 은사가 없다 할지라도, 주위에 그렇나 은사를 가진 사람이 없다면 하나님이 그 일을 하도록 우리를 부르실 수도 있다. 우리의 최우선 사역은 우리의 모습 안에서 이루어지지만, 그 다음 사역은 그 당시 필요한 것을 충족시키는 일을 하는 것이다.

우리의 모습이 우리의 사역을 보여주지만 종의 마음은 우리의 신앙이 얼마나 성숙한지를 보여준다. 모임 후에 쓰레기를 줍는다던가, 의자를 정리하는 일은 특정한 달란트와 은사를 요하는 것이 아닌 것처럼 누구나 다 종이 될 수 있고, 종이 되기 위해 유일하게 필요한 것은 성품뿐이다.

한 번도 종이 되지 않고 평생 교회에 다니는 것이 가능하다. 그러나 거듭해서 말하지만 우리는 반드시 종의 마음을 가져야 한다. 그렇다면 우리가 종의 모습을 갖고 있는지 어떻게 알 수 있는가? 예수님은 "그의 열매로 그들을 알지니 가시나무에서 포도를, 또는 엉겅퀴에서 무화과를 따겠느냐" (마 7;16)라고 말씀하셨다.


진실한 종은 자신을 섬기기 위해 내어준다

종이란 다른 일을 하면서 시간이 없다고 말하는 대신에 필요할 때 언제든지 돕기를 원하는 사람이다. 군인과 같이 임무를 위해 항상 대기하고 있는 사람이다. "군사는 자신의 지휘관을 따라 그를 기쁘게 해야 하기 때문에 이 세상의 작은 일에는 신경을 쓸 수가 없습니다" (딤후2;4, 쉬운성경). 우리가 편할 때만 섬기는 일을 한다면 우리는 진실한 종이 아니다. 진실한 종은 비록 불편하더라도 필요한 일을 한다.

하나님을 위해 당신은 언제든지 시간을 낼 수 있는가? 하나님이 당신의 계획에 차질이 생기게 하셔도 그분을 원망하지 않겠는가? 종으로서 우리는 특정한 때와 장소에서만 섬기겠다고 할 수 있는 선택의 여지가 없다. 종이 된다는 것은 우리의 스케줄을 통제할 수 있는 권리를 포기하는 것이고, 언제든지 원하시면 하나님이 일하실 수 있도록 우리의 삶을 내어드리는 것이다.

'나는 하나님의 종이다' 라는 사실을 매일 아침 스스로에게 상기 시키면 어떤 방해를 만난다 할지라도 크게 좌절하지 않을 것이다. 왜냐하면 하나님이 우리의 삶을 통해 하기를 원하시는 모든 것이 우리 삶의 과제이기 때문이다. 종은 자신의 계획에 방해를 주는 요소도 사역을 위한 하나님의 약속으로 생각하고, 섬기는 연습을 할 수 있는 기회를 얻은 것으로 행복해 하는 것이다.


진실한 종은 다른 사람의 필요를 돌아본다

종들은 언제나 다른 사람을 도울 수 있는 방법을 찾는다. 그래서 사람들의 필요를 목격하게되면 성경에서 "그러므로 우리는 기회 있는 대로 모든 이에게 착한 일을 하되 더욱 믿음의 가정들에게 할지니라" (갈 6;10)고 명하신 것처럼, 그들의 필요를 채울 수 있는 순간을 놓치지 않는다. 하나님이 도움이 필요한 사람을 우리 앞에 두실 때마다 우리는 종의 모습을 성장시킬 수 있는 기회를 받는 것이다. 하나님이 우리가 교회 식구들의 필요를 돌보는 것을 최우선 순위에 둘 것을 말씀하셨음에 주목하라.

민감성과 순발력 부족으로 우리는 섬길 수 있는 많은 기회를 놓쳤다. 섬길 수 있는 좋은 기회들은 오래 가지 않고 빨리 지나가 버리며, 다시 돌아오지 않는다. 어떤 특정한 사람을 섬길 수 있는 기회는 단 한 번밖에 없을지도 모른다. "네게 있거든 이웃에게 이르기를 갔다가 다시 오라 내일 주겠노라 하지 말며" (잠 3;28).

요한 웨슬리(John Wesley)는 위대한 하나님의 종이었다. 다음은 그의 좌우명이다. "내가 할 수 있는 모든 선한 일을 하자. 모든 수단, 모든 방법을 동원하고, 어떠한 장소에서든지, 어느 시간이든지, 상대가 누구든지, 내가 할 수 있는 오랫동안 하자." 위대한 종의 모습이다. 우리는 다른 사람이 하고 싶어하지 않는 아주 작은 일을 주의 깊게 살펴보는 것으로 시작할 수 있다. 작은 일들을 위대한 일들처럼 하라. 하나님이 보고 계신다.


진실한 종은 자기가 가지고 있는 것으로 최선을 다한다

종들은 핑계를 대거나, 뒤로 미루거나, 환경이 좀더 나아지기를 기다리지 않는다. "언젠가는" 아니면 "상황이 나아지면" 등의 말을 결코 하지 않는다. 해야 할 바를 즉시 행한다. 그래서 성경은 "완벽한 상황을 기다리면 아무것도 할 수 없다" (전 11;4, NLT)라고 말한다. 하나님은 우리가 어느 곳에 있든지, 우리가 가진 것으로 우리가 할 수 있는 일을 하기 원하신다. 불완전한 섬김이 최선의 의도보다 항상 낫다.

많은 사람들이 섬기지 않는 이유 가운데 하나는 자신이 섬기기에 부족하다고 느끼며 두려워하기 때문이다. 그들은 수퍼 스타만이 하나님을 섬길 수 있다는 거짓말을 믿는다. 어떤 교회들은 '최상' 을 그들의 우상으로 만들어 이런 잘못된 생각을 교회 안에서 장려하고 있기 때문에, 보통의 달란트를 가진 교인들이 봉사하는 것을 주춤거리게 만든다.

'잘 하지 않으려면 하지도 말라' 는 말을 들어본 적이 있겠지만, 예수님은 그런 말을 한 번도 하지 않으셨다. 처음부터 어떤 일을 잘 해낼 수는 없다. 오히려 실수와 부족함을 통해 배우는 것이다. 그래서 새들백교회에서는 '그 정도면 괜찮다(good enough)' 원리를 가지고 사역을 장려하고 있다. 이는 완벽하지 않아도 하나님이 사용하시고 복주시는 사역이 된다는 것이다. 우리는 소수의 엘리트에 의해 운영되는, 완벽하게 보이는 교회보다는 수천명의 보통 사람들이 참여하는 교회가 되기를 원한다.


진실한 종은 모든 일에 대해 똑같은 헌신을 한다

종은 '무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여' (골 3;23) 한다. 일의 규모를 상관하지 않는다. 단지 "이 일을 해야 할 필요가 있는가" 라고만 묻는다.

하찮은 일을 하기에는 자신이 너무나 중요한 사람이라고 생각하면 인생에서 아무것도 할 수 없다. 하나님은 우리를 현실 세계로부터 제외시키지 않으실 것이기 때문이다. 현실은 우리의 성품을 개발시키는 중요한 장소다. 그래서 성경은 이렇게 말한다. "아무것도 아닌 사람이 무엇이나 된 것처럼 행동한다면, 그것
은 자기를 속이는 일입니다" (갈 6;3, 쉬운성경). 작은 일을 할 때 우리는 예수님을 닮아 자라가는 것이다.

예수님의 전공 분야는 다른 사람들이 하기를 꺼리던 하찮은 일을 하시는 것이었다. 발 씻기기, 어린아이들 돌보기, 아침 식사 만들기, 문둥병자 돌보기. 예수님은 섬기러 오셨기 때문에 당신이 섬기지 못하는 사람은 없었다. 그분이 위해하심에도 불구하고 이러한 일을 해서가 아니라, 섬기는 것 그 자체의 이유로 우리가 당신의 모범을 따르기 원하시는 것이다(요 13;15).

작은 일들은 넓은 마음을 보여준다. 종의 마음은 다른 사람들이 생각 못하는 작은 행동들을 통해 나타난다. 바울은 배가 파손된 후에 나뭇가지들을 주워다가 추위에 떠는 사람들을 위해 모닥불을 피었다(행 28;3). 바울 또한 다른 사람들과 마찬가지로 완전히 지친 상태였지만 그들이 필요로 하던 일을 해주었다. 우리가 종의 마음만 가지고 있다면 우리가 할 수 없는 일은 없다.

위대한 기회들은 때때로 조그마한 일들로 위장되어 있다. 인생에서 작은 일들은 큰일을 결정한다. 하나님을 위해 위대한 일만을 하려고 하지 말라. 별로 위대하지 않은 일을 하기 시작하면 하나님은 우리가 하기를 바라시는 당신의 일을 맡기실 것이다. 특별한 일을 시도하기 전에, 평범한 일을 가지고 섬기도록 노력하라(눅 16;10-12).

하나님을 위해서 '위대한' 일을 하고자 하는 사람은 있지만, 작은 일을 기꺼이 하려고 하는 사람은 거의 없다. 리더가 되기 위한 경쟁은 치열하고 비좁지만, 종이 될 수 있는 길은 환하게 열려 있고 많은 자리가 비어 있다. 때로 우리는 우리의 상사를 섬기는, 위를 향한 섬김을 해야 할 때도 있고, 아래를 향한 섬김을 해야 할 때도 있다. 위로 섬기든 아래로 섬기든, 우리가 필요로 하는 것을 채우려고 노력할 때 종의 마음을 개발할 수 있다.


진실한 종은 그들의 사역에 충실하다

종들은 자신들의 일을 끝까지 잘 감당하고, 책임을 완수하며, 약속을 지키고, 헌신한 바를 완수한다. 반 정도 일을 끝내고 떠나는 사람이 아니라 낙심해도 중도에 포기하지 않는,믿을 수 있고 의지할 수 있는 사람이다.

신실함이란 정말 찾아보기 힘든 자질이다(시 12;1, 잠 20;6, 빌 2;19-22). 대부분의 사람들이 헌신의 의미를 잘 모르기 때문에 건성으로 헌신하고 나서 아무런 망설임이나 양심의 가책도 없이 극히 작은 이유로 그들의 헌신을 헌신짝같이 버린다. 그래서 매주 교회나 여러 기관들에서 봉사자들이 준비를 하지 않았거나, 참석하지 않거나, 아니면 연락도 없이 오지 않아서 즉흥적으로 일을 해야 하는 경우가 비일비재하게 일어나는 것이다.

다른 사람들이 당신의 헌신을 믿을 수 있는가? 당신에게 지켜야 할 약속, 완수해야 할 서약, 존중해야 할 헌신이 있는가? 이것은 하나의 테스트다. 하나님이 우리의 신실성을 테스트하시고 있는 것이다. 우리가 이 테스트에서 합격한다면 우리는 다음 사람들과 같은 무리에 속해 있는 것이다. 아브라함, 모세, 사무엘, 다윗, 다니엘, 디모데 그리고 바울. 이들 모두가 하나님의 신실한 종으로 불렸다. 그런데 이보다 더 좋은 소식은 하나님은 영원한 나라에서 우리의 신실함에대해 상주실 것이다. 하나님이 언젠가 우리에게 이렇게 말씀하신다고 상상해보라. "잘 하였도다 착하고 충성된 종아 네가 작은 일에 충성하였으매 내가 많은 것으로 네게 맡기리니 네 주인의 즐거움에 참예할지어다" (마 25;23).

신실한 종에게 절대로 은퇴란 없다. 살아 있는 동안 신실하게 섬기는 것이다. 물론 직장에서는 은퇴하겠지만, 하나님을 섬기는 것에서 은퇴란 없다.


진실한 종은 낮은 자세를 유지한다

자신을 선전하거나 다른 사람들로부터 주의를 끌려고 하지 않는다. 다른 사람에게 깊은 인상을 주기 위해 행동하는 것이 아니라 겸손의 옷을 입고 서로를 섬긴다(벧전 5;5). 누군가가 사역을 인정해줄 때는 겸손하게 받아들이지만, 유명세로 인해 사역이 방해되지 않게 한다.

바울은 겉모습만 보면 영적인 것 같지만 실제로는 보여주기 위한 쇼 내지는 다른 사람의 눈길을 끄는 섬김을 폭로했다. 그는 그것을 '눈가림(눈만 즐겁게 하는 봉사)' (엡 6;6,골 3;22)이라고 불렀는데, 그런 섬김은 자신이 얼마나 영적인가를 사람들에게 보여주기 위한 것이다. 이것이 바리새인들이 범한 죄였다. 그들은 다른 사람을 돕고, 헌금하고, 기도하는 일조차도 다른 사람에게 보여주기 위한 하나의 공연으로 생각했기 때문에 예수님은 "사람에게 보이려고 그들 앞에서 너희 의를 행치 않도록 주의하라 그렇지 아니하면 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 상을 얻지 못하느니라" (마 6;1)고 경고하셨다.

자기자신을 자랑하는 것과 종의 마음은 함께 섞일 수 없다. 신실한 종은 다른 사람의 칭찬이나 인정을 받기 위해 섬기지 않는다. 바울이 "내가 지금까지 사람의 기쁨을 구하는 것이었더면 그리스도의 종이 아니니라" (갈 1;10)고 말한 것처럼 한 분의 관객을 위해 사는 것이다.

진실한 종은 화려한 조명 아래에서 찾을 수 없다. 그들은 가능하면 그런 자리를 피하려 하고 음지에서 조용히 섬기는 것에 만족해한다. 요셉이 좋은 예가 된다. 그는 자신에게 관심을 두지 않고 조용히 보디발을 섬겼고, 그리고 감옥의 간수를 섬겼으며, 바로 왕의 떡 굽는 관원과 술 맡은 관원을 섬겼다. 하나님은 그런 섬김의 자세를 보시고 복을 주셨다. 바로가 그를 높은 자리로 승진 시켰을 때도 요셉은 계속 종의 마음을 가졌고, 특히 자신을 판 형제들에게도 종의 마음을 가지고 섬겼다.

불행한 사실은 오늘날의 많은 지도자들이 종의 자세로 시작하지만 나중에는 유명 인사가 된다는 것이다. 그들은 화려한 불빛이 언제나 그들의 눈을 가린다는 사실을 인식하지 못한 채 관심의 초점이 되는 것에 중독이 된다.

어쩌면 당신은 작은 곳에서 아무도 알아주는 이 없이, 감사의 인사도 받지 못하면서 무명의 인물로 섬기고 있을지 모른다. 그렇다면 이것을 기억하라. 하나님은 목적이 있어서 바로 그곳에 당신을 보내신 것이다. 당신의 머리털까지 세시며 당신의 모든 것을 아시는 하나님이시기 때문에 하나님이 다른 곳으로 보내기로 결정하실 때까지는 그곳에 머물라. 그분이 당신이 다른 곳에 있기를 원하시면 알려주실 것이다. 당신의 사역은 하나님 나라에 있어서 정말로 중요하다. "우리 생명이신 그리스도께서 나타나실 그 때에 너희도 그와 함께 영광 중에 나타나리라" (골 3;4).

미국에는 750개 이상의 명예의 전당(Halls of Fame)이 있고, 450개 이상의 인명 사전(Who's Who) 출판부가 있지만 그곳에서는 진실한 종을 찾을 수 없다. 유명해지는 것은 진실한 종에게는 관심 밖의 일인데, 그 이유는 그들이 유명한 것과 의미 있는 것의 차이를 이해하기 때문이다. 우리에게는 얼굴을 구성하는 중요한 부위들이 있지만, 간혹 그것이 없이도 살 수는 있다.그러나 우리 몸 안에 숨겨져 있는 부분은 없으면 살 수 없다. 똑같은 진리가 예수님의 몸에도 적용된다. 가장 위대한 섬김은 때때로 눈에 보이지 않는다(고전 12;22-24).

이름 없이 음지에서 섬긴 종들을 하나님은 천국에서 공개적으로 상주실 것이다. 지상에서는 들어본 적이 없는 사람들, 정신 지체아를 돌보는 사람들, 지체를 쓸 수 없는 노인들에게 목욕을 시켜주는 사람들, 에이즈 환자를 돌보는 사람들 그리고 보이지 않게 봉사하는 수많은 사람들을 하나님은 기억하실 것이다.

이것을 기억하며, 당신의 사역이 주목받지 못하거나 사람들에게 당연한 것으로 생각되어질 때 실망하지 말고 계속 하나님을 섬기라. "그러므로 내 사랑하는 형제들아 견고하며 흔들리지 말며 항상 주의 일에 더욱 힘쓰는 자들이 되라 이는 너희 수고가 주 안에서 헛되지 않은 줄을 앎이니라" (고전 15;58). 가장 작은 일이라 할지라도 하나님은 아시고 상주실 것이다. "또 누구든지 제자의 이름으로 이 소자 중 하나에게 냉수 한 그릇이라도 주는 자는 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 그 사람이 결단코 상을 잃지 아니하리라 하시니라" (마 10;42).

We serve God by serving others.

The world defines greatness in terms of power, possessions, prestige, and position. If you can demand service from others, you've arrived. In our self-serving culture with its me-first mentality, acting like a servant is not a popular concept.

Jesus, however, measured greatness in terms of service, not status. God determines your greatness by how many people you serve, not how many people serve you. This is so contrary to the world's idea of greatness that we have a hard time understanding it, much less practicing it.
The disciples argued about who deserved the most prominent position, and 2,000 years later, Christian leaders still jockey for position and prominence in churches, denominations, and parachurch ministries.

Thousands of books have been written on leadership, but few on servanthood. Everyone wants to lead; no one wants to be a servant. We would rather be generals than privates. Even Christians want to be "servant-leaders," not just plain servants. But to be like Jesus is to be a servant. That's what he called himself.

While knowing your shape is important for serving God, having the heart of a servant is even more important. Remember, God shaped you for service, not for self-centeredness. Without a servant's heart, you will be tempted to misuse your shape for personal gain. You will also be tempted to use it as an excuse to exempt yourself from meeting some needs.

God often tests our hearts by asking us to serve in ways we're not shaped. If you see a man fall into a ditch, God expects you to help him out, not say, "I don't have the gift of mercy or service." While you may not be gifted for a particular task, you may be called to do it if no one gifted at it is around. Your primary ministry should be in the area of your shape, but your secondary service is wherever you're needed at the moment.

Your shape reveals your ministry, but your servant's heart will reveal your maturity. No special talent or gift is required to stay after a meeting to pick up trash or stack chairs. Anyone can be a servant. All it requires is character.

It is possible to serve in church for a lifetime without ever being a servant. You must have a servant's heart. How can you know if you have the heart of a servant? Jesus said, "You can tell what they are by what they do."'

Real servants make themselves available to serve. Servants don't fill up their time with other pursuits that could limit their availability. They want to be ready to jump into service when called on. Much like a soldier, a servant must always be standing by for duty: "No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who
enlisted him." If you only serve when it's convenient for you, you're not a real servant. Real servants do what's needed, even when it's inconvenient.

Are you available to God anytime? Can he mess up your plans without you becoming resentful? As a servant, you don't get to pick and choose when or where you will serve. Being a servant means giving up the right to control your schedule and allowing God to interrupt it whenever he needs to.

If you will remind yourself at the start of every day that you are God's servant, interruptions won't frustrate you as much, because your agenda will be whatever God wants to bring into your life. Servants see interruptions as divine appointments for ministry and are happy for the opportunity to practice serving.

Real servants pay attention to needs. Servants are always on the lookout for ways to help others. When they see a need, they seize the moment to meet it, just as the Bible commands us: "Whenever we have the opportunity, we have to do what is good for everyone, especially for the family of believers." When God puts someone in need right in front of you, he is giving you the opportunity to grow in servanthood. Notice that God says the needs of your church family are to be given preference, not put at the bottom of your "things to do" list.

We miss many occasions for serving because we lack sensitivity and spontaneity. Great opportunities to serve never last long. They pass quickly, sometimes never to return again. You may only get one chance to serve that person, so take advantage of the moment. "Never tell your neighbors to wait until tomorrow if you can help them now."

John Wesley was an incredible servant of God. His motto was "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can." That is greatness. You can begin by looking for small tasks that no one else wants to do. Do these little things as if they were great things, because God is watching.

Real servants do their best with what they have. Servants don't make excuses, procrastinate, or wait for better circumstances. Servants never say, "One of these days" or "When the time is right." They just do what needs to be done. The Bible says, "If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done." God expects you to do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are. Less-than-perfect service is always better than the best intention.

One reason many people never serve is that they fear they are not good enough to serve. They have believed the lie that serving God is only for superstars. Some churches have fostered this myth by making "excellence" an idol, which makes people of average talent hesitant to get involved.

You may have heard it said, "If it can't be done with excellence, don't do it." Well, Jesus never said that! The truth is, almost everything we do is done poorly when we first start doing it-that's how we learn. At Saddleback Church, we practice the `flood enough" principle: It doesn't have to be perfect for God to use and bless it. We would rather involve thousands of regular folks in ministry than have a perfect church run by a few elites.

Real servants do every task with equal dedication. Whatever they do, servants "do it with all their heart." The size of the task is irrelevant. The only issue is, does it need to be done?

You will never arrive at the state in life where you're too important to help with menial tasks. God will never exempt you from the mundane. It's a vital part of your character curriculum. The Bible says, "If you think you are too important to help someone in need, you are only fooling yourself. You are really a nobody." It is in these small services that we grow like Christ.

Jesus specialized in menial tasks that everyone else tried to avoid: washing feet, helping children, fixing breakfast, and serving lepers. Nothing was beneath him, because he came to serve. It wasn't in spite of his greatness that he did these things, but because of it, and he expects us to follow his example.

Small tasks often show a big heart. Your servant's heart is revealed in little acts that others don't think of doing, as when Paul gathered brushwood for a fire to warm everyone after a shipwreck. He was just as exhausted as everyone else, but he did what everyone needed. No task is beneath you when you have a servant's heart.

Great opportunities often disguise themselves in small tasks. The little things in life determine the big things. Don't look for great tasks to do for God. Just do the not-so-great stuff, and God will assign you whatever he wants you to do. But before attempting the extraordinary, try serving in ordinary ways.

There will always be more people willing to do "great" things for God than there are people willing to do the little things. The race to be a leader is crowded, but the field is wide open for those willing to be servants. Sometimes you serve upward to those in authority, and sometimes you serve downward to those in need. Either way, you develop a servant's heart when you're willing to do anything needed.

Real servants are faithful to their ministry. Servants finish their tasks, fulfill their responsibilities, keep their promises, and complete their commitments. They don't leave a job half undone, and they don't quit when they get discouraged. They are trustworthy and dependable.

Faithfulness has always been a rare quality.' Most people don't know the meaning of commitment. They make commitments casually, then break them for the slightest reason without any hesitation, remorse, or regret. Every week, churches and other organizations must improvise because volunteers didn't prepare, didn't show up, or didn't even call to say they weren't coming.

Can you be counted on by others? Are there promises you need to keep, vows you need to fulfill, or commitments you need to honor? This is a test. God is testing your faithfulness. If you pass the test, you're in good company: Abraham, Moses, Samuel, David, Daniel, Timothy, and Paul were all called faithful servants of God. Even better, God has promised to reward your faithfulness in eternity. Imagine what it will feel like one day to have God say to you, "Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate together!"

By the way, faithful servants never retire. They serve faithfully as long as they're alive. You can retire from your career, but you will never retire from serving God.

Real servants maintain a low profile. Servants don't promote or call attention to themselves. Instead of acting to impress and dressing for success, they "put on the apron of humility, to serve one another." If recognized for their service, they humbly accept it but don't allow notoriety to distract them from their work.

Paul exposed a kind of service that appears to be spiritual but is really just a put-on, a show, an act to get attention. He called it "eyeservice" serving in order to impress people with how spiritual we are. This was a sin of the Pharisees. They turned helping others, giving, and even prayer into a performance for others. Jesus hated this attitude and warned, "When you do good deeds, don't try to show off. If you do, you won't get a reward from your Father in heaven.'

Self-promotion and servanthood don't mix. Real servants don't serve for the approval or applause of others. They live for an audience of One. As Paul said, "If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ."

You won't find many real servants in the limelight; in fact, they avoid it when possible. They are content with quietly serving in the shadows. Joseph is a great example. He didn't draw attention to himself, but quietly served Potiphar, then his jailer, then Pharaoh's baker and wine taster, and God blessed that attitude. When Pharaoh promoted him to prominence, Joseph still maintained a servant's heart, even with his brothers, who had betrayed him.

Unfortunately, many leaders today start off as servants but end up as celebrities. They become addicted to attention, unaware that always being in the spotlight blinds you.

You may be serving in obscurity in some small place, feeling unknown and unappreciated. Listen: God put you where you are for a purpose! He has every hair on your head numbered, and he knows your address. You had better stay put until he chooses to move you. He will let you know if he wants you somewhere else. Your ministry matters to the kingdom of God. "When Christ ... shows up again on this earth, you'll show up, too-the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity."

There are more than 750 "Halls of Fame" in America and more than 450 "Who's Who" publications, but you won't find many real servants in these places. Notoriety means nothing to real servants because they know the difference between prominence and significance. You have several prominent features on your body that you could live without. It is the hidden parts of your body that are indispensable. The same is true in the Body of Christ. The most significant service is often the service that is unseen-"

In heaven God is going to openly reward some of his most obscure and unknown servantspeople we have never heard of on earth, who taught emotionally disturbed children, cleaned up after incontinent elderly, nursed AIDS patients, and served in thousands of other unnoticed ways.

Knowing this, don't be discouraged when your service is unnoticed or taken for granted. Keep on serving God! "Throw yourselves into the work of the Master, confident that nothing you do for him is a waste of time or effort." Even the smallest service is noticed by God and will be rewarded. Remember the words of Jesus: "If, as my representatives, you give even a cup of cold water to a little child, you will surely be rewarded."
