작년에도 단기선교를 가고 싶었지만, 복음을 증거하는 것보다는 섬머스쿨이 더 중요하다고 생각하여 선교여행에 참여하지 않았습니다.  감사하게도, 엄마와 대화하던 중  새 해에는 꼭 제가 단기 여름선교에 참여해야겠다는 결단을 엄마와 제가 하게되었습니다. 

그 결단을 한지 1년이 지났고, 지난 3월에  제가 참여하고 있는 대학생 선교회에서 주관하는 여름단교선기에  참가하기 위한 신청을 하였습니다. 
신청을 할 당시는 1년동안 계획했던 바를 실천에 옮긴다는 단순한 생각이었지만, 
실지로 선교훈련을 받으면서  하나님께서 왜 선교를 가야하는지 그리고 내 인생의 목적이 무엇인지에 관해서  점진적으로 깨닫게 해주셨습니다.

선교여행을 가기 위한 준비 초기 과정에서 제가 힘들었던 것은 선교를 하는 것이 왜 그토록 중요한 가를 이해하는 일이었습니다.  저의 관심은  선교여행을 통해서 
하나님의 나라를 확장하는데 보다는  하나님께서 제가 갖고 있던 마음의 부담들을 치료하시는 기회로 삼기를 원했습니다.

그러나 지난 3개월동안 저는 저와 세상에 있는 모든 잃은 영혼들에 대한 하나님의  심정에 대해서 많이 배울 수 있었습니다. 

하나님께서는 그분을 믿는 모든 자들에 대한 놀라운 계획을 갖고 계신다는 것을 제게 가르치고 계십니다.  그러나, 누군가가  하나님의 말씀을 그들의 심령 속에 심어주는  일을 하지 않는다면 사람들은 결국 하나님의 계획에 대해서 알길이 없게될 것입니다.

로마서 10:15절에 보면  보내심을 받지 않으면 어떻게 전할 수 있습니까?  기록된대로 복음을 증거하는 자들의 발길이   얼마나 아름다운지요.

하나님은 우주의 창조주시요, 영혼의 구원주이시요,  왕들중의 왕이시요, 주들 중의 주이시며!, 약한 자들의 친구이십니다.  그러나 , 사람들이 복음을 듣거나 보지 못한다면 어떻게 그들이  주님을 믿을 수 있겠습니까?

”예수께서 나아와 일러 가라사대 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 내게 주셨으니 그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 족속으로 제자를 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 침례를 주고 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라 볼찌어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라 하시니라”

이 것이 제가 가야만 하는 이유입니다.  제가 성공한 삶을 사는 것보다 더욱 더  귀한 삶을 살기를 원하시는 하나님이심을 깨닫습니다.   이 세상의 모든 부요 보다도 더욱  귀하고, 더욱 급박한 그 것을 전하기 위해서 저는 가야합니다.
복음을 증거하기 위해서 한달동안 니카라구아에 가는 것은 쉽지 않은 일입니다.  저를 포함해서 우리 선교팀은 여러가지로 고생을 하게될 것입니다.  우리는 한달동안 매일 콩과 밥만 먹어야합니다.  일주일 내내 습기차고 더운 곳에서, 물도 깨끗지 않고, 모기나 어쩌면 큰거미때문에 고통을 당하게 될지 모릅니다.  그리고 이주 동안 샤워도 못하게될 거고요.

거기다가 무엇보다도 영적인 싸움도 감당해야할 것입니다. 그러나 로마서 8:31절 에, “하나님께서 우리와 함께 하시면 그  누구가  우리를 대항하랴”라고 말씀하십니다.  
그러므로 저는, 제가 가는한  하나님께서 일을 행하시리라는 확신을 갖고 떠납니다. ”

니카라구아 선교여행을 통한 하나님의 계획이 제 영적인 삶의 최고봉이 아니란 것을 압니다.  이번 선교여행은 단지 “예수그리스도의 복음에 합당한 삶”을 살도록 가르치는 여정의 출발점이 될 것입니다.   (빌 1:27)

Why I’m Going to Nicaragua:
Last year, I wanted to go on missions but I didn’t because I wanted to take summer school more than I wanted to share the gospel. Thankfully, my mom initiated a conversation with me that led to us both promising to commit the next summer to missions. A whole year has passed since then, so in March, I applied to go on short-term summer missions with KCM (Korean-American Campus Missions), which is the campus ministry I’m involved in. At the time, I wanted to go because it was simply part of my year-long plan, but as training began, God slowly opened my eyes to see my purpose in going on missions and my purpose in life.
  In the beginning of this whole process, I struggled with understanding why going on missions was so important. I focused more on using it as an opportunity for God to heal me of my burdens instead of really taking advantage of the teachings for the advancement of His Kingdom. But throughout these passed 3 months, I learned so much about God’s heart for me and for every lost soul in the world. God is teaching me now that He has GREAT plans for every person that believes in Him, but those people won’t know it unless someone does the work to plant seeds of God’s Word in them. It says in Romans 10:15, “And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’” God is the Creator of the universe, Savior of souls, King of kings, Lord of lords, Friend to the weak… But how will people come to believe in Him if they don’t hear and see the gospel?
Matthew 28:18-20 says, “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.’”

This is why I MUST go. I see now that God desires more for me than to live a successful life. I have to go to share something that is more urgent and more valuable than all the riches of this world. Going to Nicaragua for a month to share the gospel won’t be easy.

My team and I will struggle with many things like: having to eat the same meal (rice and beans) everyday, being in hot and humid weather 24/7, not having clean water, being pestered by mosquitos and maybe tarantulas, and especially not being able to shower for 2 weeks! And that’s not including the spiritual battles we will face! BUT Romans 8:31 says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” So I go, in full faith, that God will do the work, as long as I go.

I know that God’s plan for me on my mission trip to Nicaragua will not be the apex (high point) of my spiritual life… It will only be the beginning of a journey that will teach me to “live a life that is worthy of the gospel of Christ.” (Philippians 1:27)
