Subject: [Lee Family Updates] Update on Violence after Elections (Thursday, January 3rd)
Reply-To: dr.steve@theleefamily.net
Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for all the emails that we've been getting in response to our updates. It's a great encouragement to know that we have so many people praying on behalf of the situation here in Kenya. Kapsowar has been pretty quiet for the past couple of days. The police were able to sneak out the police captain that the mobs wanted to kill, as well as a few others that were hiding out in the police station. This has helped to defuse a lot of the tension that was here in Kapsowar.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the rest of the country--particularly for Eldoret, a nearby town where we normally do our shopping. Violence there has continued unabated and the death toll continues to rise. Some of you may have even heard or read about the church that was burned down in Eldoret with over 50 women and children locked inside it.
Due to the disturbances throughout the country we are beginning to run low on a lot of essential supplies. The government has been cutting power to our area since the beginning of this week. This means that we have to run on generator power, but we are down to our last 25 gallons of diesel fuel. We are turning on the generator for only two hours a day so that the theatre can sterilize their instruments, the lab can run a few tests, etc. We are also running dangerously low on IV cannulas (needles used to give people IV fluids and drugs), as well as a half dozen essential medicines such as spinal anesthesia. One of our greatest needs, however, is oxygen. We have several patients critically ill whose lives depend on getting oxygen. We also cannot do surgery under general anesthesia without oxygen. Normally, we get our oxygen in cylinders from Eldoret, but currently it is considered too dangerous to travel there. Please pray that God would provide these essential supplies for our hospital.
As mentioned in my last update, there is a rally scheduled for today for supporters of Raila Odinga, the opposition candidate. The police have declared this to be an illegal meeting, but they are going to meet regardless. Everyone is waiting to see the outcome of this meeting. If the people are met with police brutality, there is fear that it will trigger further violence throughout Kenya, and so we need a lot of prayer for peace today! Unfortunately, the news hasn't been very promising the past 24 hours, with both sides ratcheting up the inflammatory rhetoric and neither side interested in negotiations.
It's sad that these politicians are putting their own ambitions for power over the lives of their own people. To date, over 300 people have been killed and 70,000 people displaced from their homes. There are also many reports of people stranded without food, water, or adequate shelter. Please pray that God would work in the hearts of Kenya's leaders to bring them to their senses and bring about a spirit of compromise and a desire for peace.
In Christ,
Steve
