고등학생 때 패스트푸드 음식점에서 약 2년 남짓 일한 적이 있습니다. 일이 힘든 부분도 있었습니다. 손님들이 원하지 않는 치즈를 샌드위치에 넣었다고 화를 쏟아내면, 내가 만들진 않았지만 사과해야 했습니다. 그 일을 그만두고 얼마 후 나는 우리 대학에 있는 컴퓨터 관련 일에 지원했습니다. 나를 뽑은 사람들은 내 컴퓨터 실력보다는 패스트푸드 음식점에서 일한 경력에 더 관심이 많았습니다. 그들은 내가 사람들을 어떻게 상대하는지를 아는지 알고 싶어 했습니다. 유쾌하지 못한 환경에서 일했던 경험이 더 좋은 일을 찾을 수 있도록 나를 준비시켜 주었던 것입니다!
어린 다윗은 우리가 불우하다고 할 수 있는 환경을 거치며 잘 견뎌냈습니다. 이스라엘이 골리앗과 싸우기 위해 누군가를 보내야 했을 때 그 일에 용감하게 나서는 사람은 아무도 없었습니다. 오직 다윗뿐이었습니다. 사울 왕이 주저하며 다윗을 싸움터로 보내려 할 때 다윗은 목동으로서 양들을 구하기 위해 사자나 곰과 싸워서 그것들을 죽여야 했던 일을 설명했습니다(삼상 17:34-36). 그는 확신을 가지고 “여호와께서 나를 사자의 발톱과 곰의 발톱에서 건져내셨은즉 나를 이 블레셋 사람의 손에서도 건져내시리이다”(37절)라고 말했습니다.
다윗은 목동으로 일하면서 큰 존경을 받지 못했지만, 그동안 골리앗과 싸울 준비를 하게 되었고 마침내 이스라엘의 가장 위대한 왕이 되었습니다. 우리도 견디기 힘든 상황에 놓여있을지 모르지만, 어쩌면 그것들을 통해 하나님께서 더 큰 어떤 일을 위해 우리를 준비시키시는지도 모릅니다!
• 주님, 제 삶의 불우한 시기에, 주님께서 더 큰 어떤 일을 위해 나를 준비시키는 것일지도 모른다는 것을 알고 잘 견딜 수 있게 도와주소서.
하나님은 현재의 상황을 사용하셔서 우리에게 미래를 준비하게 하신다.
8. 그가 서서 이스라엘 군대를 향하여 외쳐 이르되 너희가 어찌하여 나와서 전열을 벌였느냐 나는 블레셋 사람이 아니며 너희는 사울의 신복이 아니냐 너희는 한 사람을 택하여 내게로 내려보내라
32. 다윗이 사울에게 말하되 그로 말미암아 사람이 낙담하지 말 것이라 주의 종이 가서 저 블레셋 사람과 싸우리이다 하니
33. 사울이 다윗에게 이르되 네가 가서 저 블레셋 사람과 싸울 수 없으리니 너는 소년이요 그는 어려서부터 용사임이니라
34. 다윗이 사울에게 말하되 주의 종이 아버지의 양을 지킬 때에 사자나 곰이 와서 양 떼에서 새끼를 물어가면
35. 내가 따라가서 그것을 치고 그 입에서 새끼를 건져내었고 그것이 일어나 나를 해하고자 하면 내가 그 수염을 잡고 그것을 쳐죽였나이다
36. 주의 종이 사자와 곰도 쳤은즉 살아 계시는 하나님의 군대를 모욕한 이 할례 받지 않은 블레셋 사람이리이까 그가 그 짐승의 하나와 같이 되리이다
37. 또 다윗이 이르되 여호와께서 나를 사자의 발톱과 곰의 발톱에서 건져내셨은즉 나를 이 블레셋 사람의 손에서도 건져내시리이다 사울이 다윗에게 이르되 가라 여호와께서 너와 함께 계시기를 원하노라
48. 블레셋 사람이 일어나 다윗에게로 마주 가까이 올 때에 다윗이 블레셋 사람을 향하여 빨리 달리며
49. 손을 주머니에 넣어 돌을 가지고 물매로 던져 블레셋 사람의 이마를 치매 돌이 그의 이마에 박히니 땅에 엎드러지니라
50. 다윗이 이같이 물매와 돌로 블레셋 사람을 이기고 그를 쳐죽였으나 자기 손에는 칼이 없었더라

I worked at a fast-food restaurant for over two years in high school. Some aspects of the job were difficult. Customers verbalized their anger while I apologized for the unwanted slice of cheese on the sandwich I didn’t make. Soon after I left, I applied for a computer job at my university. The employers were more interested in my fast-food experience than my computer skills. They wanted to know that I knew how to deal with people. My experience in unpleasant circumstances prepared me for a better job!
Young David persevered through an experience we might well call unpleasant. When Israel was challenged to send someone to fight Goliath, no one was brave enough to step up to the task. No one but David. King Saul was reluctant to send him to fight, but David explained that as a shepherd he had fought and killed a lion and a bear for the sake of the sheep(1 Sam. 17:34–36). Confidently he stated, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and . . . the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine”(v. 37).
Being a shepherd didn’t earn David much respect, but it prepared him to fight Goliath and eventually become Israel’s greatest king. We may be in difficult circumstances, but through them God might be preparing us for something greater!, guest writer Julie Schwab

God uses present circumstances to prepare us for the future.
8. Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, "Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me.
32. David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him."
33. Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth."
34. But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock,
35. I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.
36. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.
37. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you."
48. As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.
49. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
50. So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
