34 하나님께서 그들을 진멸하실 때에, 그들은 비로소 하나님을 찾았으며, 돌아와서 하나님께 빌었다.
35 그제서야 그들은, 하나님이 그들의 반석이심과, 가장 높으신 하나님이 그들의 구원자이심을 기억하였다.
36 그러나 그들은 입으로만 하나님께 아첨하고, 혀로는 하나님을 속일 뿐이었기에,
37 마음은 분명히 그를 떠났으며, 그가 세우신 언약을 믿지도 않았다.
38 그런데도 그는 긍휼이 많으신 하나님이시기에, 그들의 죄를 덮어 주셔서 그들을 멸하지 아니하시며, 거듭 그 노하심을 돌이키셔서 참고 또 참으셨다.
39 하나님께서는 기억하신다. 사람은 다만 살덩어리, 한 번 가면 되돌아올 수 없는 바람과 같은 존재임을 기억하신다.
40 그들이 광야에서 하나님께 얼마나 자주 반역하였던가? 황무지에서 그를 얼마나 또 괴롭혔던가?
41 그들은 하나님을 거듭거듭 시험하고, 이스라엘의 거룩하신 분의 마음을 상하게 하였다.
42 그들이 하나님의 손의 권능을 기억하지 아니하며, 대적에게서 속량하여 주신 그 날도 잊어버렸다.
43 하나님이 이집트에서는 여러 가지 징조를 보이시고, 소안 들에서는 여러 가지 기적을 보이셨다.
44 강물을 피로 변하게 하셔서, 물을 마실 수 없게 하셨다.
45 파리를 쏟아 놓아서 물게 하시고, 개구리를 풀어 놓아 큰 피해를 입게 하셨다.
46 농작물을 해충에게 내주시고, 애써서 거둔 곡식을 메뚜기에게 내주셨다.
47 포도나무를 우박으로 때리시고, 무화과나무를 무서리로 얼어 죽게 하셨으며,
48 가축을 우박으로 때리시고, 양 떼를 번개로 치셨다.
49 그들에게 진노의 불을 쏟으시며, 분노와 의분과 재앙을 내리시며, 재앙의 사자를 내려 보내셨다.
50 주님은 분노의 길을 터 놓으시니, 그들을 죽음에서 건져내지 않으시고, 생명을 염병에 넘겨 주셨다.
51 이집트의 맏아들을 모두 치시고, 그의 힘의 첫 열매들을 함의 천막에서 치셨다.
52 그는 백성을 양 떼처럼 인도하시고, 가축 떼처럼 광야에서 이끄셨다.
53 그들을 안전하게 이끄시기에, 그들은 두려워하지 않았다. 그들의 원수들은 바다가 덮어 버렸다.
54 그들을 거룩한 땅으로 이끌어 들이시고, 그 오른손으로 만드신 이 산으로 이끄셨다.
55 여러 민족을 그들이 보는 앞에서 몰아내시고, 줄로 재어서 땅을 나누어 주시고, 이스라엘 지파를 자기들의 천막에서 살게 하셨다.
34 When God began killing them,
they finally sought him.
They repented and took God seriously.
35 Then they remembered that God was their rock,
that God Most High[b] was their redeemer.
36 But all they gave him was lip service;
they lied to him with their tongues.
37 Their hearts were not loyal to him.
They did not keep his covenant.
38 Yet he was merciful and forgave their sins
and did not destroy them all.
Many times he held back his anger
and did not unleash his fury!
39 For he remembered that they were merely mortal,
gone like a breath of wind that never returns.
40 Oh, how often they rebelled against him in the wilderness
and grieved his heart in that dry wasteland.
41 Again and again they tested God’s patience
and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
42 They did not remember his power
and how he rescued them from their enemies.
43 They did not remember his miraculous signs in Egypt,
his wonders on the plain of Zoan.
44 For he turned their rivers into blood,
so no one could drink from the streams.
45 He sent vast swarms of flies to consume them
and hordes of frogs to ruin them.
46 He gave their crops to caterpillars;
their harvest was consumed by locusts.
47 He destroyed their grapevines with hail
and shattered their sycamore-figs with sleet.
48 He abandoned their cattle to the hail,
their livestock to bolts of lightning.
49 He loosed on them his fierce anger—
all his fury, rage, and hostility.
He dispatched against them
a band of destroying angels.
50 He turned his anger against them;
he did not spare the Egyptians’ lives
but ravaged them with the plague.
51 He killed the oldest son in each Egyptian family,
the flower of youth throughout the land of Egypt.[c]
52 But he led his own people like a flock of sheep,
guiding them safely through the wilderness.
53 He kept them safe so they were not afraid;
but the sea covered their enemies.
54 He brought them to the border of his holy land,
to this land of hills he had won for them.
55 He drove out the nations before them;
he gave them their inheritance by lot.
He settled the tribes of Israel into their homes.
