그 땅의 거인들 Giants in the Land [ 민수기 13:25 - 14:9 ] - 찬송가 357장
우리가 곧 올라가서 그 땅을 취하자 능히 이기리라 - 민수기 13:30
시내산 근처에 진을 친지 2년이 지나고, 이제 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님이 그들에게 약속해주신 가나안 땅으로 들어가기 직전에 있었습니다. 하나님은 그들에게 12명의 정탐꾼을 보내어 그곳에 살고 있는 사람들과 땅을 알아보라고 말씀하셨습니다. 정탐꾼들이 가나안 사람들의 강한 모습과 그 도시의 크기를 보고 와서, 그중 열 명은 “불가능합니다!”라고 하였고, 나머지 두 명은 “가능합니다!”라고 하였습니다.
무엇 때문에 이런 차이가 나게 되었을까요?
열 명은 거인들을 그들 자신과 비교했기에 거인들이 거대하게 보였고, 다른 두 명인 갈렙과 여호수아는 거인들을 하나님과 비교하니 그 크기가 작아보였던 것입니다. 그들은 “여호와는 우리와 함께 하시느니라 그들을 두려워하지 말라”(민 14:9)라고 말하였습니다.
불신앙으로는 결코 난공불락의 도시와 무적의 거인들 같은 어려움들을 극복할 수 없습니다. 어려움에 마음을 빼앗겨 그 생각에 사로잡혀 있다가 인간적인 자원으로만 그에 대처하게 만들 뿐입니다.
반면에, 믿음은 어떤 환경의 위험이나 어려움을 최소화하는 것이 결코 아니라, 오히려 그것들로부터 눈을 떼어 하나님을 바라보고 하나님의 보이지 않는 도우심과 능력을 의지합니다.
당신의 ‘거인’은 무엇입니까? 깨뜨릴 수 없는 습관입니까? 저항할 수 없는 유혹입니까? 어려운 결혼생활입니까? 아니면 마약에 중독된 자녀입니까? 어려움들을 우리 자신과 비교한다면 우리는 항상 그것에 압도당하고 말 것입니다. 믿음은 어려운 일의 거대함으로부터 전능하시고 무소부재하신 하나님의 위대하심으로 눈을 돌리는 것입니다.
사랑하는 주님, 내 삶의 ‘거인’이 두려움으로 나를 압도하기 시작할 때 주님을 신뢰할 수 있도록 도와주소서.
두려움이 마음의 문을 두드리면 믿음으로 그에 대응하라.
민수기 13:25–14:9
[25] 사십 일 동안 땅을 정탐하기를 마치고 돌아와
[26] 바란 광야 가데스에 이르러 모세와 아론과 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중에게 나아와 그들에게 보고하고 그 땅의 과일을 보이고
[27] 모세에게 말하여 이르되 당신이 우리를 보낸 땅에 간즉 과연 그 땅에 젖과 꿀이 흐르는데 이것은 그 땅의 과일이니이다
[28] 그러나 그 땅 거주민은 강하고 성읍은 견고하고 심히 클 뿐 아니라 거기서 아낙 자손을 보았으며
[29] 아말렉인은 남방 땅에 거주하고 헷인과 여부스인과 아모리인은 산지에 거주하고 가나안인은 해변과 요단 가에 거주하더이다
[30] 갈렙이 모세 앞에서 백성을 조용하게 하고 이르되 우리가 곧 올라가서 그 땅을 취하자 능히 이기리라 하나
[31] 그와 함께 올라갔던 사람들은 이르되 우리는 능히 올라가서 그 백성을 치지 못하리라 그들은 우리보다 강하니라 하고
[32] 이스라엘 자손 앞에서 그 정탐한 땅을 악평하여 이르되 우리가 두루 다니며 정탐한 땅은 그 거주민을 삼키는 땅이요 거기서 본 모든 백성은 신장이 장대한 자들이며
[33] 거기서 네피림 후손인 아낙 자손의 거인들을 보았나니 우리는 스스로 보기에도 메뚜기 같으니 그들이 보기에도 그와 같았을 것이니라
[14:1] 온 회중이 소리를 높여 부르짖으며 백성이 밤새도록 통곡하였더라
[2] 이스라엘 자손이 다 모세와 아론을 원망하며 온 회중이 그들에게 이르되 우리가 애굽 땅에서 죽었거나 이 광야에서 죽었으면 좋았을 것을
[3] 어찌하여 여호와가 우리를 그 땅으로 인도하여 칼에 쓰러지게 하려 하는가 우리 처자가 사로잡히리니 애굽으로 돌아가는 것이 낫지 아니하랴
[4] 이에 서로 말하되 우리가 한 지휘관을 세우고 애굽으로 돌아가자 하매
[5] 모세와 아론이 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중 앞에서 엎드린지라
[6] 그 땅을 정탐한 자 중 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙이 자기들의 옷을 찢고
[7] 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중에게 말하여 이르되 우리가 두루 다니며 정탐한 땅은 심히 아름다운 땅이라
[8] 여호와께서 우리를 기뻐하시면 우리를 그 땅으로 인도하여 들이시고 그 땅을 우리에게 주시리라 이는 과연 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅이니라

Giants in the Land

We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it. - Numbers 13:30
After being encamped near Mt. Sinai for two years, the people of Israel were on the verge of entering Canaan—the land God had promised them. God told them to send twelve spies to assess the land and the people living there. When the spies saw the strength of the Canaanites and the size of their cities, ten of them said, “We can’t!” Two said, “We can!”
What made the difference?
When the ten compared the giants with themselves and the giants loomed large, the two—Caleb and Joshua—compared the giants with God, and the giants were cut down to size. “The Lord is with us,” they said. “Do not be afraid of them”(Num.14:9).
Unbelief never lets us get beyond the difficulties—the impregnable cities and the impossible giants. It preoccupies itself with them, brooding over them, pitting them against mere human resources.
Faith, on the other hand, though it never minimizes the dangers and difficulties of any circumstance, looks away from them to God and counts on His invisible presence and power.
What are your “giants”? A habit you cannot break? A temptation you cannot resist? A difficult marriage? A drug-abusing son or daughter? If we compare ourselves with our difficulties, we will always be overwhelmed. Faith looks away from the greatness of the undertaking to the greatness of an ever-present, all-powerful God.
Dear Lord, when the “giants” in my life begin to overwhelm me with fear, help me to trust in You.
When fear knocks, answer it with faith.
Numbers 13:25–14:9
[25] And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.
[26] Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
[27] Then they told him, and said: "We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
[28] "Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there.
[29] "The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan."
[30] Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it."
[31] But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we."
[32] And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature.
[33] "There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."
[14:1] So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night.
[2] And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, "If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!
[3] "Why has the LORD brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"
[4] So they said to one another, "Let us select a leader and return to Egypt."
[5] Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
[6] But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes;
[7] and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: "The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land.
[8] "If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, 'a land which flows with milk and honey.'
[9] "Only do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them."

어제의 큐티처럼 다른 사람과 비교하거나 내가 이룬 성취로 나의 가치를 평가하려는 태도에서 나온 열등감, 내가 무가치하다는 생각들이 나를 얼어붙게 합니다. 하나님의 말씀을 믿음으로 육신에서 나온 거짓과 싸우겠습니다. 하나님은 오직 은혜로 내가 충성스럽게 감당할 일을 주셨고, 영광스럽게 그 일을 사용하십니다. "성취"를 자랑하거나 수치스러워 하는 자세를 십자가에 못박습니다. 내게 주신 모든 것이 하나님의 은혜이고 사랑입니다. 말씀의 양식으로 먹이시고 말씀의 검으로 승리하게 하시는 아버지 하나님을 찬양합니다.

이들이 불과 1년 여전에 하나님이 내리신 애굽땅에 내리신10 재앙의 기적을 목격하고
출애굽 과정에서 홍해를 가르시는 역사를 목격하고
낮에는 구름기둥 밤에는 불기둥으로 인도하시는 하나님의 손길을 목격하고
시내산에서 말씀하시고 언약을 체결하신 그 하나님을 경험한 자들 맞습니까?
그리고 현재적으로 매일 아침 저녁으로 먹을 것을 공급하시는 하나님의 손길을 보고 있는 자들 맞습니까?
보고 듣고 경험한 것이 하나님에 대한 신뢰를 갖게 한다면
이들이야말로 진정으로 하나님을 신뢰해야할 자들일텐데…
믿음은 결국 눈으로 보고 확인하고의 문제가 아니라 우선적으로 하나님의 말씀에 대한 신뢰임을 다시 한번 확인합니다.
주님, 제 심령 속에 있는 이런 불신은 없습니까?
점령하라고 명령하셨지만 난공불락처럼 보이는 도시와 무적의 거인들처럼 보이는 세력 앞에 떨고 있는 모습은 없습니까?
전진하지 못하고 후퇴할 생각가운데 있는 나의 모습은 아닙니까?
제게 깨닫고 제 모습을 보게 하옵소서.
주님을 신뢰하므로 주님의 약속을 믿고 전진하는 자가 되겠습니다.
