영원을 보는 시력 [ 고린도후서 4:16 - 5:8 ]
우리가 주목하는 것은 보이는 것이 아니요 보이지 않는 것이니 - 고린도후서 4:18
지난달에 시력검사를 하러갔다가 좋은 소식을 들었습니다. 원거리 시력이 좋아졌다는 것이었습니다. 그런데, 한 친구가 나에게 “나이가 들면 원거리 시력은 좋아질 수 있지만 근거리 시력은 감소하게 된다.”라고 말해주었을 때 그것은 더 이상 내게 좋은 소식이 아니었습니다.
그 시력검사 결과를 보며 나는 그리스도인들에게서 내가 관찰해온 또 다른 종류의 원거리 시력 향상에 대해 생각해보게 되었습니다. 오랫동안 주님을 알고 있던 사람들이나 큰 시련을 견디어낸 이들은 다른 사람들보다 천국을 바라보는 시력이 더 좋아 보입니다. 그들의 영생을 보는 시력은 더 좋아졌고 가까운 곳을 보는 “세속”의 시력은 쇠약해지고 있습니다.
바울사도도 이런 유형의 영원을 보는 시력을 갖고 있었기에, 고린도교회에게 “우리가 잠시 받는 환난의 경한 것이 지극히 크고 영원한 영광의 중한 것을 우리에게 이루게 함이니…보이는 것은 잠깐이요 보이지 않는 것은 영원함이라”(고후 4:17-18)라고 격려했습니다.
지금 우리는 “시력” 문제로 고민하고 있습니다. 하나님께서 이 세상의 삶에서 우리에게 주신 모든 것들을 즐기면서도, 신학자 요나단 에드워드가 우리의 미래에 대해 말했던 “장래 하나님과 온전히 즐기게 될 하늘나라는 이 세상 최고의 안락시설과는 비교할 수 없이 더 좋다.”라고 말한 것을 믿는 것 사이에는 계속 팽팽한 대립이 있습니다. 우리가 하나님을 바라볼 때에야 완전한 시력을 갖게 될 것입니다.
주님, 이 땅에서 우리의 삶은 영원과 비교할 때
한 순간일 뿐임을 압니다. 우리에게 주어진 시간을
즐거워할 수 있도록 도와주시고 주님을 만날 그 날까지
주님의 사랑과 선하심을 전하도록 우리를 사용하여 주소서.
당신의 눈을 영원한 상급에 고정하라.
고린도후서 4:16–5:8
[16] 그러므로 우리가 낙심하지 아니하노니 우리의 겉사람은 낡아지나 우리의 속사람은 날로 새로워지도다
[17] 우리가 잠시 받는 환난의 경한 것이 지극히 크고 영원한 영광의 중한 것을 우리에게 이루게 함이니
[18] 우리가 주목하는 것은 보이는 것이 아니요 보이지 않는 것이니 보이는 것은 잠깐이요 보이지 않는 것은 영원함이라
[5:1] 만일 땅에 있는 우리의 장막 집이 무너지면 하나님께서 지으신 집 곧 손으로 지은 것이 아니요 하늘에 있는 영원한 집이 우리에게 있는 줄 아느니라
[2] 참으로 우리가 여기 있어 탄식하며 하늘로부터 오는 우리 처소로 덧입기를 간절히 사모하노라
[3] 이렇게 입음은 우리가 벗은 자들로 발견되지 않으려 함이라
[4] 참으로 이 장막에 있는 우리가 짐진 것 같이 탄식하는 것은 벗고자 함이 아니요 오히려 덧입고자 함이니 죽을 것이 생명에 삼킨 바 되게 하려 함이라
[5] 곧 이것을 우리에게 이루게 하시고 보증으로 성령을 우리에게 주신 이는 하나님이시니라
[6] 그러므로 우리가 항상 담대하여 몸으로 있을 때에는 주와 따로 있는 줄을 아노니
[7] 이는 우리가 믿음으로 행하고 보는 것으로 행하지 아니함이로라
[8] 우리가 담대하여 원하는 바는 차라리 몸을 떠나 주와 함께 있는 그것이라

Eternal Eyesight [ 2 Corinthians 4:16 - 5:8 ]
We do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. — 2 Corinthians 4:18
I received good news at my eye checkup last month—my faraway vision has improved. Well, I thought it was good news until a friend informed me: “Faraway vision can improve as we age; close-up vision may diminish.”
The report made me think of another kind of improved faraway vision that I have observed in some Christians. Those who have known the Lord for a long time or who have gone through great trials seem to have a better heavenly vision than the rest of us. Their eternal eyesight has gotten better and their close-up “earthly” vision is diminishing.
Because the apostle Paul had that type of eternal vision, he encouraged the church in Corinth: “Our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory ... The things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal”(2 Cor.4:17-18).
For now we struggle with our “eyesight.” There’s a tension between enjoying all that God has given us in this life, yet still believing what theologian Jonathan Edwards said about our future: “To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here.” Seeing Him will bring perfect vision.
Lord, we know that our life on this earth is buta moment compared to eternity. Help us to enjoythe time we’ve been given, and use us to tell of Yourlove and goodness until that day when we see You.
Keep your eyes fixed on the prize.
2 Corinthians 4:16–5:8
[16] Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
[17] For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.
[18] So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
[5:1] Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
[2] Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling,
[3] because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.
[4] For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
[5] Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
[6] Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.
[7] We live by faith, not by sight.
[8] We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
