남편이 심장수술 받은 후, 나는 그가 누운 병원 침대 옆에서 초조하게 밤을 보냈습니다. 다음 날 오전, 갑자기 미용실 예약이 생각이 나서 흐트러진 머리를 손으로 매만지며 “예약을 취소해야겠다.”라고 말했습니다.
“엄마, 세수만 하고 예약 시간에 맞춰 가세요.” 딸이 말했습니다.
“아니야. 괜찮아. 내가 여기 있어야 해.” 하며 내가 우겼습니다.
딸 로시가 말했습니다. “내가 여기 있을게요. 자신을 돌봐요, 엄마 … 자기를 돌봐야 해요. 엄마 자신을 잘 돌보면 아빠한테 더 도움이 될 거예요.”
모세는 혼자서 이스라엘백성들의 재판을 담당하느라 지쳐 있었습니다. 이드로가 사위 모세에게 주의를 주었습니다. “필경 기력이 쇠하리니 이 일이 네게 너무 중함이라 네가 혼자 할 수 없으리라”(출 18:18). 그러고 나서 이드로는 모세에게 일을 다른 사람들에게 위임하고 무거운 짐을 같이 지는 방법을 설명해주었습니다.
그리스도인에게 역설적으로 느껴질지 몰라도, 자기 스스로를 돌보는 것은 건강한 삶을 사는 데 꼭 필요한 것입니다(마 22:37-39; 엡 5:29-30). 물론 우리는 먼저 하나님을 사랑하고, 다른 사람도 사랑해야 합니다. 그러나 또한 우리의 몸과 마음을 새롭게 하기 위해 적당한 휴식을 취해야 합니다. 자기 자신을 돌본다는 것은 때로는 다른 사람이 우리의 무거운 짐을 대신 져줄 수 있도록 옆으로 물러서는 것을 의미합니다.
예수님도 자주 자리를 피해 휴식을 취하시고 기도하셨습니다(막 6:30-32). 예수님의 본을 따르면 우리의 인간관계가 더 원활해지고 다른 사람을 더 잘 돌볼 수 있게 될 것입니다.
사랑하는 주님, 오늘 제 영혼을 새롭게 해주소서. 제게 맡겨진 여러 가지 일들을 동시에 감당해나갈 때, 삶의 균형을 이룰 수 있게 도와주소서. 주님의 사랑과 돌보심에 감사드립니다.
모든 것을 다하려고 하지 말고, 시간을 내어 당신의 몸과 마음을 새롭게 하라.

[14] 모세의 장인이 모세가 백성에게 행하는 모든 일을 보고 이르되 네가 이 백성에게 행하는 이 일이 어찌 됨이냐 어찌하여 네가 홀로 앉아 있고 백성은 아침부터 저녁까지 네 곁에 서 있느냐
[15] 모세가 그의 장인에게 대답하되 백성이 하나님께 물으려고 내게로 옴이라
[16] 그들이 일이 있으면 내게로 오나니 내가 그 양쪽을 재판하여 하나님의 율례와 법도를 알게 하나이다
[17] 모세의 장인이 그에게 이르되 네가 하는 것이 옳지 못하도다
[18] 너와 또 너와 함께 한 이 백성이 필경 기력이 쇠하리니 이 일이 네게 너무 중함이라 네가 혼자 할 수 없으리라
[19] 이제 내 말을 들으라 내가 네게 방침을 가르치리니 하나님이 너와 함께 계실지로다 너는 하나님 앞에서 그 백성을 위하여 그 사건들을 하나님께 가져오며
[20] 그들에게 율례와 법도를 가르쳐서 마땅히 갈 길과 할 일을 그들에게 보이고
[21] 너는 또 온 백성 가운데서 능력 있는 사람들 곧 하나님을 두려워하며 진실하며 불의한 이익을 미워하는 자를 살펴서 백성 위에 세워 천부장과 백부장과 오십부장과 십부장을 삼아
[22] 그들이 때를 따라 백성을 재판하게 하라 큰 일은 모두 네게 가져갈 것이요 작은 일은 모두 그들이 스스로 재판할 것이니 그리하면 그들이 너와 함께 담당할 것인즉 일이 네게 쉬우리라
[23] 네가 만일 이 일을 하고 하나님께서도 네게 허락하시면 네가 이 일을 감당하고 이 모든 백성도 자기 곳으로 평안히 가리라
[24] 이에 모세가 자기 장인의 말을 듣고 그 모든 말대로 하여

After my husband underwent heart surgery, I spent an anxious night by his hospital bed. Mid-morning, I remembered a scheduled haircut. “I’ll have to cancel,” I said, raking my fingers distractedly through my straggly hair.
“Mom, just wash your face and go to your appointment,” my daughter said.
“No, no,” I insisted. “It doesn’t matter. I need to be here.”
“I’ll stay,” Rosie said. “Self-care, Mom ... Self-care. You’re of more use to Dad if you take care of yourself.”
Moses was wearing himself out serving alone as judge over the Israelites. Jethro cautioned his son-in-law Moses: “You will only wear [yourself] out. The work is too heavy . . . you cannot handle it alone”(Ex.18:18). He then explained ways that Moses could delegate his work and share his heavy load with others.
Though it may seem paradoxical for the Christian, self-care is essential for a healthy life(Matt.22:37-39; Eph.5:29-30). Yes, we must love God first and love others as well, but we also need to get adequate rest to renew our body and spirit. Sometimes self-care means stepping away and graciously allowing others to help us with our burdens.
Jesus often slipped away to rest and pray (Mark 6:30-32). When we follow His example, we will be more effective in our relationships and better able to give care to others.
Dear Lord, refresh my spirit today. Help me to bring balance to my life as I juggle my responsibilities. Thank You for Your love and care.
Don’t try to do everything—take time to refresh your body and spirit.

[14] So when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said, "What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?"
[15] And Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of God.
[16] "When they have a difficulty, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God and His laws."
[17] So Moses' father-in-law said to him, "The thing that you do is not good.
[18] "Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself.
[19] "Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God.
[20] "And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do.
[21] "Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
[22] "And let them judge the people at all times. Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for they will bear the burden with you.
[23] "If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their place in peace."
[24] So Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said.
