위험한 도전 [ 역대하 20:15 - 20:22 ]
이 전쟁은 너희에게 속한 것이 아니요 하나님께 속한 것이니라 - 역대하 20:15
수백만 명이 텔레비전을 통해 지켜보는 가운데 닉 월렌다는 직경이 고작 12.5센티미터 밖에 되지 않는 540미터 길이의 줄 위를 걸어서 나이아가라폭포를 가로질러 건너갔습니다. 그는 모든 대비책을 마련해두었지만, 그 높이와 아래에서 몰아치는 급류가 주는 긴박감과 위험에 더하여, 닉의 시야를 가리는 두터운 안개와 그의 균형감을 위협하는 바람, 폭포에서 생긴 물보라가 그의 발놀림을 위태롭게 했습니다. 이러한 위험들 속에서, 그리고 어쩌면 그 위험들이 있었기 때문에 닉은 하나님께 “수없이 기도”하고 찬양했다고 말했습니다.
이스라엘 백성들도 위험한 도전 한가운데에서 하나님을 찬양했습니다. 그들이 마주친 도전은 그들을 치려고 모여든 큰 무리의 군대였습니다(대하 20:2). 그러나 여호사밧왕은 겸손히 하나님의 도우심을 구하고 나서, 노래하는 자들을 택하여 이스라엘 군대의 앞줄에 서서 행군하도록 했습니다. 그 예배자들은 “여호와께 감사하세 그의 인자하심이 영원하도다”(21절)라고 노래를 불렀습니다. 그들이 노래하기 시작하자 여호와께서 적들로 하여금 서로 공격하게 하여 스스로 전멸하도록 하셨습니다.
곤경 중에 하나님을 찬양하는 것은 우리 본연의 속성을 거스르는 것을 의미할 수도 있습니다. 우리는 자기를 보호하려 하거나 전략을 짜려 하고, 쉽게 염려하는 경향이 있기 때문입니다. 하지만, 예배는 괴로운 생각들이나 자기를 의존하려는 것으로부터 우리의 마음을 지켜줍니다. 그것은 우리에게 이스라엘백성들이 배운 교훈, 즉 “이 전쟁은 [우리]에게 속한 것이 아니요 하나님께 속한 것”(15절)임을 떠올리게 해줍니다.
주님, 주의 자비는 영원하시니 내가 주님을 찬양합니다.
이생에서의 모든 전쟁이
다 주께 속한 것임을 기억하게 해주소서.
주께서 통치하시니 그 결과도 다 주님의 것입니다.
우리 앞에 무엇이 놓여있든,
우리 뒤에는 항상 하나님이 계신다.
역대하 20:1, 15-22
[1] 그 후에 모압 자손과 암몬 자손들이 마온 사람들과 함께 와서 여호사밧을 치고자 한지라
[15] 야하시엘이 이르되 온 유다와 예루살렘 주민과 여호사밧 왕이여 들을지어다 여호와께서 이같이 너희에게 말씀하시기를 너희는 이 큰 무리로 말미암아 두려워하거나 놀라지 말라 이 전쟁은 너희에게 속한 것이 아니요 하나님께 속한 것이니라
[16] 내일 너희는 그들에게로 내려가라 그들이 시스 고개로 올라올 때에 너희가 골짜기 어귀 여루엘 들 앞에서 그들을 만나려니와
[17] 이 전쟁에는 너희가 싸울 것이 없나니 대열을 이루고 서서 너희와 함께 한 여호와가 구원하는 것을 보라 유다와 예루살렘아 너희는 두려워하지 말며 놀라지 말고 내일 그들을 맞서 나가라 여호와가 너희와 함께 하리라 하셨느니라 하매
[18] 여호사밧이 몸을 굽혀 얼굴을 땅에 대니 온 유다와 예루살렘 주민들도 여호와 앞에 엎드려 여호와께 경배하고
[19] 그핫 자손과 고라 자손에게 속한 레위 사람들은 서서 심히 큰 소리로 이스라엘 하나님 여호와를 찬송하니라
[20] 이에 백성들이 아침에 일찍이 일어나서 드고아 들로 나가니라 나갈 때에 여호사밧이 서서 이르되 유다와 예루살렘 주민들아 내 말을 들을지어다 너희는 너희 하나님 여호와를 신뢰하라 그리하면 견고히 서리라 그의 선지자들을 신뢰하라 그리하면 형통하리라 하고
[21] 백성과 더불어 의논하고 노래하는 자들을 택하여 거룩한 예복을 입히고 군대 앞에서 행진하며 여호와를 찬송하여 이르기를 여호와께 감사하세 그의 인자하심이 영원하도다 하게 하였더니
[22] 그 노래와 찬송이 시작될 때에 여호와께서 복병을 두어 유다를 치러 온 암몬 자손과 모압과 세일 산 주민들을 치게 하시므로 그들이 패하였으니

A Dangerous Challenge [ 2 Chronicles 20:15 - 20:22 ]
The battle is not yours, but God’s. — 2 Chronicles 20:15
While millions watched on television, Nik Wallenda walked across Niagara Falls on a 1,800-foot wire that was only 5 inches in diameter. He took all the precautions he could. But adding to the drama and danger of both the height and the rushing water below, a thick mist obscured Nik’s sight, wind threatened his balance, and spray from the falls challenged his footing. Amid—and perhaps because of—these perils, he said that he “prayed a lot” and praised God.
The Israelites also praised God in the middle of a dangerous challenge. Theirs involved a large group of warriors who had gathered to fight them (2 Chron. 20:2). After humbly asking God for help, King Jehoshaphat appointed a choir to march out into battle in front of the Israelite army. The worshipers sang: “Praise the Lord, for His mercy endures forever” (v.21). When they began to sing, the Lord caused the enemy forces to attack and destroy each other.
Praising God in the midst of a challenge may mean overriding our natural instincts. We tend toward self-protection, strategizing, and worry. However, worshiping can guard our hearts against troubling thoughts and self-reliance. It reminds us of the lesson the Israelites learned: “The battle is not [ours], but God’s”(v.15).
Lord, I praise You, for Your mercy is everlasting.
elp me to remember that every battle in
this life is Yours. The outcome belongs to
You because You are sovereign.
No matter what is in front of us, God is always behind us.
2 Chronicles 20:1, 15-22
[1] It happened after this that the people of Moab with the people of Ammon, and others with them besides the Ammonites, came to battle against Jehoshaphat.
[15] And he said, "Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the LORD to you: 'Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God's.
[16] 'Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel.
[17] 'You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!' Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the LORD is with you."
[18] And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the LORD, worshiping the LORD.
[19] Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with voices loud and high.
[20] So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the LORD your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper."
[21] And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the LORD, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: "Praise the LORD, For His mercy endures forever."
[22] Now when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.
