고의적으로 살인한 사람은 도피성에 피신해도 소용없고 죽음으로 죽음을 갚아야 합니다. 도피성으로 피신한 자는 대제사장이 죽은 후 집으로 돌아갈 수 있습니다. 피를 흘려 땅을 더럽힌 죄는 피를 흘리게 한 사람의 피가 아니면 속할 수 없습니다.

16 만일 철 연장으로 사람을 쳐 죽이면 이는 고살한 자니 그 고살자를 반드시 죽일 것이요 17 만일 사람을 죽일 만한 돌을 손에 들고 사람을 쳐 죽이면 이는 고살한 자니 그 고살자를 반드시 죽일 것이요 18 만일 사람을 죽일 만한 나무 연장을 손에 들고 사람을 쳐 죽이면 이는 고살한 자니 그 고살자를 반드시 죽일 것이니라 19 피를 보수하는 자가 그 고살자를 친히 죽일 것이니 그를 만나거든 죽일 것이요 20 만일 미워하는 까닭에 밀쳐 죽이거나 기회를 엿보아 무엇을 던져 죽이거나 21 원한으로 인하여 손으로 쳐 죽이면 그 친 자를 반드시 죽일 것이니 이는 고살하였음이라 피를 보수하는 자가 그 고살자를 만나거든 죽일 것이니라
16 " 'If a man strikes someone with an iron object so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death. 17 Or if anyone has a stone in his hand that could kill, and he strikes someone so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death. 18 Or if anyone has a wooden object in his hand that could kill, and he hits someone so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death. 19 The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death. 20 If anyone with malice aforethought shoves another or throws something at him intentionally so that he dies 21 or if in hostility he hits him with his fist so that he dies, that person shall be put to death; he is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.
22 원한 없이 우연히 사람을 밀치거나 기회를 엿봄이 없이 무엇을 던지거나 23 보지 못하고 사람을 죽일 만한 돌을 던져서 죽였다 하자 이는 원한도 없고 해하려 한 것도 아닌즉 24 회중이 친 자와 피를 보수하는 자 간에 이 규례대로 판결하여 25 피를 보수하는 자의 손에서 살인자를 건져 내어 그가 피하였던 도피성으로 돌려보낼 것이요 그는 거룩한 기름 부음을 받은 대제사장의 죽기까지 거기 거할 것이니라 26 그러나 살인자가 어느 때든지 그 피하였던 도피성 지경 밖에 나갔다 하자 27 피를 보수하는 자가 도피성 지경 밖에서 그 살인자를 만나 죽일찌라도 위하여 피 흘린 죄가 없나니 28 이는 살인자가 대제사장의 죽기까지 그 도피성에 유하였을 것임이라 대제사장의 죽은 후에는 그 살인자가 자기의 산업의 땅으로 돌아갈 수 있느니라
22 " 'But if without hostility someone suddenly shoves another or throws something at him unintentionally 23 or, without seeing him, drops a stone on him that could kill him, and he dies, then since he was not his enemy and he did not intend to harm him, 24 the assembly must judge between him and the avenger of blood according to these regulations. 25 The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send him back to the city of refuge to which he fled. He must stay there until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil. 26 " 'But if the accused ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which he has fled 27 and the avenger of blood finds him outside the city, the avenger of blood may kill the accused without being guilty of murder. 28 The accused must stay in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the death of the high priest may he return to his own property.

29 이는 너희 대대로 거하는 곳에서 판단하는 율례라 30 무릇 사람을 죽인 자 곧 고살자를 증인들의 말을 따라서 죽일 것이나 한 증인의 증거만 따라서 죽이지 말 것이요 31 살인죄를 범한 고살자의 생명의 속전을 받지 말고 반드시 죽일 것이며 32 또 도피성에 피한 자를 대제사장의 죽기 전에는 속전을 받고 그의 땅으로 돌아가 거하게 하지 말 것이니라 33 너희는 거하는 땅을 더럽히지 말라 피는 땅을 더럽히나니 피 흘림을 받은 땅은 이를 흘리게 한 자의 피가 아니면 속할 수 없느니라 34 너희는 너희 거하는 땅 곧 나의 거하는 땅을 더럽히지 말라 나 여호와가 이스라엘 자손 중에 거함이니라
29 " 'These are to be legal requirements for you throughout the gener-ations to come, wherever you live. 30 " 'Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. 31 " 'Do not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. He must surely be put to death. 32 " 'Do not accept a ransom for anyone who has fled to a city of refuge and so allow him to go back and live on his own land before the death of the high priest. 33 " 'Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it. 34 Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I, the LORD, dwell among the Israelites.' "
