우리 집 정원의 한 작은 지점에 문제가 있는 것 같아 보였습니다. 아무리 물을 잘 주어도 그 부분에서는 언제나 잔디가 잘 자라지 못했습니다.
그래서 하루는 삽을 들고 문제가 된 부분을 파 보았는데, 그 때 무엇이 문제인지 알게 되었습니다. 지면 바로 밑에 약 8센티미터의 두께로 돌들이 깔려 있었던 것입니다. 그래서 돌들을 제거하고 새로운 씨가 뿌리를 내릴 수 있도록 영양분이 많은 흙을 깔아주었습니다.
예수님도 씨앗과 흙에 대해 말씀하셨습니다. 복음의 씨앗이 여러 종류의 땅에 심어질 때 어떻게 되는지를 말하고 있는 마태복음 13장의 비유에서, 주님은 “흙이 얕은” 돌밭에 떨어진 씨는 곧 싹이 나오나 해가 돋은 후에 말라버린다고 말씀하셨습니다(5-6절). 복음을 듣고 받아들였으나 그 삶 속에 복음이 뿌리를 내리지 못하는 사람에 대해 말씀하신 것입니다. 진정한 신자가 아닌 이 사람은 고난이 닥쳐오면 하나님을 저버립니다.
이 비유를 예수님이 다음과 같이 끝내신 것이 얼마나 감사한지 모릅니다. “좋은 땅에 뿌려졌다는 것은 말씀을 듣고 깨닫는 자니 결실하여 어떤 것은 백 배, 어떤 것은 육십 배, 어떤 것은 삼십 배가 되느니라”(23절). 이 말씀은 우리의 구원과 함께 따라오는 특권과 책임을 함께 상기시켜 줍니다.
복음의 씨앗과 영적 성장에 필요한 흙을 주신 하나님을 찬양합시다.
주님, 열매의 약속이 담긴
주님의 말씀을 심을 수 있는 흙이 되겠습니다.
매일 주님께로 열려 있어서
주님이 심으신 것이 뿌리내리길 원합니다.
하나님께 열려 있는 마음은
말씀의 씨앗이 잘 자랄 수 있는 토양이다.
마태복음 13:1-9
[1] 그 날 예수께서 집에서 나가사 바닷가에 앉으시매
[2] 큰 무리가 그에게로 모여 들거늘 예수께서 배에 올라가 앉으시고 온 무리는 해변에 서 있더니
[3] 예수께서 비유로 여러 가지를 그들에게 말씀하여 이르시되 씨를 뿌리는 자가 뿌리러 나가서
[4] 뿌릴새 더러는 길 가에 떨어지매 새들이 와서 먹어버렸고
[5] 더러는 흙이 얕은 돌밭에 떨어지매 흙이 깊지 아니하므로 곧 싹이 나오나
[6] 해가 돋은 후에 타서 뿌리가 없으므로 말랐고
[7] 더러는 가시떨기 위에 떨어지매 가시가 자라서 기운을 막았고
[8] 더러는 좋은 땅에 떨어지매 어떤 것은 백 배, 어떤 것은 육십 배, 어떤 것은 삼십 배의 결실을 하였느니라
[9] 귀 있는 자는 들으라 하시니라

Taking Root [ Matthew 13:1 - 13:9 ]
Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up. — Matthew 13:5
A small area of my yard just couldn’t seem to get going. The grass always seemed sparse in that spot, no matter how well I watered it.
So one day I stuck a shovel into this troublesome real estate and discovered the problem: Just below the surface was a layer of stones about three inches deep. This led me to re-place the stones with rich topsoil in which new seeds could take root.
Jesus talked about seed and soils. In a parable in Matthew 13 about what happens when the seed of the gospel is sown on various kinds of ground, He said that seeds that land on stones and “not much earth” grow quickly but then die in the sun (vv.5-6). He was speaking of one who has heard and received the gospel, but in whose life the message doesn’t take root. When trouble comes, this person─who is not a genuine believer─falls away.
How grateful we can be for Jesus’ words that conclude this parable: “He who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the Word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit” (v.23). What a reminder of both the privilege and the responsibility that accompanies our salvation.
Praise God for the seed of the gospel and the soil of spiritual growth. —Dave Branon

Matthew 13:1-9
[1] That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake.
[2] Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore.
[3] Then he told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out to sow his seed.
[4] As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.
[5] Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.
[6] But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.
[7] Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.
[8] Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop--a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
[9] He who has ears, let him hear."
