그리스 화약은 고대 비잔틴 제국의 군대가 전쟁 때 사용했던 화학용액입니다. 어느 온라인 자료에 의하면, 672년경에 발명되었던 이 화약은 엄청난 파괴력을 지니고 있었고, 특히 수면 위에서도 계속 탈 수 있었기 때문에 해전에서 많이 사용되었습니다. 그리스 화약이 과연 무엇이었을까요? 그것의 실제 화학 성분은 불가사의로 남아 있습니다. 매우 귀중한 무기였기에 제조법은 극비에 붙여졌고, 그 결과 역사 속에 파묻혀버리고 말았습니다. 오늘날 과학자들이 당시의 제조법을 복제해보려고 계속 시도해보았으나 성공하지 못했습니다.
그러나 그리스도인들을 무참히 파괴시키는 무기는 이런 불가사의가 아닙니다. 야고보는 우리의 관계를 파괴시키는 원인으로 종종 아주 다른 종류의 불을 이야기합니다. “혀는 곧 불이요 불의의 세계라 혀는 우리 지체 중에서 온 몸을 더럽히고”(약 3:6). 이런 강한 표현은 무분별한 말들이 주변 사람들에게 얼마나 해를 끼치는지를 일깨워줍니다.
서로의 관계나 가족, 교회를 파괴시킬 수 있는 “그리스 화약” 같은 말들을 만들어내는 대신, 우리의 혀를 주의해 성령님의 통제 아래 두고 우리의 말로 주님을 영화롭게 합시다.
하나님 아버지, 가끔 우리는 우리 자신에게 가장 나쁜 적일 때가
있습니다. 동료 신자들에게 파괴적인 말을 하는 저희를
용서해주시고, 대신 주님과 함께 걷는 그들을 격려하며
세워줄 수 있도록 지혜로운 말들을 사용하게 하소서.
혀에 재갈 물리려면 하나님이 우리의 마음을 다스리게 해야 한다.
야고보서 3:1-12
[1] 내 형제들아 너희는 선생된 우리가 더 큰 심판을 받을 줄 알고 선생이 많이 되지 말라
[2] 우리가 다 실수가 많으니 만일 말에 실수가 없는 자라면 곧 온전한 사람이라 능히 온 몸도 굴레 씌우리라
[3] 우리가 말들의 입에 재갈 물리는 것은 우리에게 순종하게 하려고 그 온 몸을 제어하는 것이라
[4] 또 배를 보라 그렇게 크고 광풍에 밀려가는 것들을 지극히 작은 키로써 사공의 뜻대로 운행하나니
[5] 이와 같이 혀도 작은 지체로되 큰 것을 자랑하도다 보라 얼마나 작은 불이 얼마나 많은 나무를 태우는가

[9] 이것으로 우리가 주 아버지를 찬송하고 또 이것으로 하나님의 형상대로 지음을 받은 사람을 저주하나니
[10] 한 입에서 찬송과 저주가 나오는도다 내 형제들아 이것이 마땅하지 아니하니라
[11] 샘이 한 구멍으로 어찌 단 물과 쓴 물을 내겠느냐
[12] 내 형제들아 어찌 무화과나무가 감람 열매를, 포도나무가 무화과를 맺겠느냐 이와 같이 짠 물이 단 물을 내지 못하느니라

The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. — James 3:6
Greek fire was a chemical solution that was used in ancient warfare by the Byzantine Empire against its enemies. According to one online source, it was developed around ad 672 and was used with devastating effect, especially in sea warfare because it could burn on water. What was Greek fire? Its actual chemical composition remains a mystery. It was such a valuable military weapon that the formula was kept an absolute secret—and was lost to the ravages of history. Today, researchers continue to try to replicate that ancient formula, but without success.
One source of catastrophic destruction among believers in Christ, however, is not a mystery. James tells us that the source of ruin in our relationships is often a very different kind of fire. He wrote, “The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body” (James 3:6). Those strong words remind us how damaging unguarded words can be to those around us.
Instead of creating the kind of verbal “Greek fire” that can destroy relationships, families, and churches, let’s yield our tongue to the Holy Spirit’s control and allow our words to glorify the Lord.
It seems, Father, that sometimes we are our ownworst enemies. Forgive us for speaking destructivelyto fellow Christians, and teach us to use wise wordsthat can encourage and build their walk with You.
To bridle your tongue, give God the reins of your heart.
James 3:1-12
[1] Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.
[2] We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.
[3] When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.
[4] Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
[5] Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
[6] The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
[7] All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man,
[8] but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
[9] With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness.
[10] Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.
[11] Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
[12] My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
