성경의 예언에 대한 사람들의 태도는 매우 다양합니다. 어떤 신자들은 예언에 너무 집착한 나머지, 최근의 세상사들이 예수님께서 곧 재림하실 징조라고 생각하면서 끊임없이 그 얘기들을 합니다. 그런가하면 다른 부류의 사람들은 예언을 너무 가볍게 다루어서, 마치 예언이 그리스도인으로서의 삶과는 아무 상관이 없다고 여기는 듯 보입니다.

그러면 예언은 중요한 것일까요? 전체적인 맥락 안에서 예언을 이해하는 데 도움이 되는 몇 가지 사실들이 있습니다. 성경에는 31,124 구절이 있습니다. 이 구절 중 8,352 구절이 예언과 관련된 내용을 담고 있습니다. 이는 전체 성경구절의 27 퍼센트입니다!

성경의 4분의 1 이상을 예언이 차지하고 있으므로, 신자라면 하나님의 계시를 나타내주는 예언의 역할을 매우 중요하게 여겨야 합니다. 그러면서도 하나님께서 왜 성경에 예언을 기록하셨는지도 기억해야 합니다. 베드로는 세상이 어떻게 종말을 맞이하게 될 지 묘사한 후에, “이 모든 것이 이렇게 풀어지리니 너희가 어떠한 사람이 되어야 마땅하냐 거룩한 행실과 경건함으로”(벧후 3:11) 살아야할 것이라고 결론을 내립니다. 다시 말해서 우리는 미래의 처소에 적합한 경건의 삶을 매일 선택하며 살아야 하는 것입니다.

하나님이 미래에 대한 정보를 우리에게 미리 주신 이유는, 하나님을 영화롭게 하고, 하나님이 역사의 전적인 주관자이심을 우리가 확신하며, 우리가 경건한 삶을 살도록 도전을 주시기 위해서입니다.

베드로후서 3:1-13

[1] 사랑하는 자들아 내가 이제 이 둘째 편지를 너희에게 쓰노니 이 두 편지로 너희의 진실한 마음을 일깨워 생각나게 하여
[2] 곧 거룩한 선지자들이 예언한 말씀과 주 되신 구주께서 너희의 사도들로 말미암아 명하신 것을 기억하게 하려 하노라
[3] 먼저 이것을 알지니 말세에 조롱하는 자들이 와서 자기의 정욕을 따라 행하며 조롱하여
[4] 이르되 주께서 강림하신다는 약속이 어디 있느냐 조상들이 잔 후로부터 만물이 처음 창조될 때와 같이 그냥 있다 하니
[5] 이는 하늘이 옛적부터 있는 것과 땅이 물에서 나와 물로 성립된 것도 하나님의 말씀으로 된 것을 그들이 일부러 잊으려 함이로다
[6] 이로 말미암아 그 때에 세상은 물이 넘침으로 멸망하였으되
[7] 이제 하늘과 땅은 그 동일한 말씀으로 불사르기 위하여 보호하신 바 되어 경건하지 아니한 사람들의 심판과 멸망의 날까지 보존하여 두신 것이니라
[8] 사랑하는 자들아 주께는 하루가 천 년 같고 천 년이 하루 같다는 이 한 가지를 잊지 말라
[9] 주의 약속은 어떤 이들이 더디다고 생각하는 것 같이 더딘 것이 아니라 오직 주께서는 너희를 대하여 오래 참으사 아무도 멸망하지 아니하고 다 회개하기에 이르기를 원하시느니라
[10] 그러나 주의 날이 도둑 같이 오리니 그 날에는 하늘이 큰 소리로 떠나가고 물질이 뜨거운 불에 풀어지고 땅과 그 중에 있는 모든 일이 드러나리로다
[11] 이 모든 것이 이렇게 풀어지리니 너희가 어떠한 사람이 되어야 마땅하냐 거룩한 행실과 경건함으로
[12] 하나님의 날이 임하기를 바라보고 간절히 사모하라 그 날에 하늘이 불에 타서 풀어지고 물질이 뜨거운 불에 녹아지려니와
[13] 우리는 그의 약속대로 의가 있는 곳인 새 하늘과 새 땅을 바라보도다

Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness? — 2 Peter 3:11
 
People’s attitudes toward Bible prophecy vary widely. Some believers are so preoccupied with it that they are constantly talking about the latest world events, thinking they are biblical signs that Christ could return at any moment. Others are so casual in their view of prophecy that it seems as if they don’t believe it’s relevant to the Christian life at all.

So is prophecy important? Here are some facts to help put things in perspective. There are 31,124 verses in the Bible. Of these verses, 8,352 have prophetic content of some kind. That’s 27 percent of Scripture!

Because prophecy occupies more than a quarter of Scripture, the believer should deeply value its role in God’s revelation. But in doing so, we should remember why God put it there. After describing how the world will end, Peter concludes, “Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives” (2 Peter 3:11 niv). In other words, we should make choices daily for godly living that conform to our future dwelling place.

God has given us information about the future to glorify Himself, to assure us of His sovereign control of history, and to challenge us to godly living.

2 Peter 3:1-13

[1] Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking.
[2] I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
[3] First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.
[4] They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation."
[5] But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water.
[6] By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
[7] By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
[8] But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
[9] The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
[10] But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.
[11] Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives
[12] as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.
[13] But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.
