하나님의 율법 책을 낭독하고 그 뜻을 해석하여 백성에게 그 낭독하는 것을 다 깨닫게 하니 (느헤미야 8:8)
제2차 세계대전 때 기본군사훈련에 소집된 미국의 병사들은 집을 멀리 떠나 훈련을 받으며 힘든 상황들을 견뎌보려고 유머와 편지 쓰는 일로 위안을 삼았습니다. 한 젊은이는 집으로 보낸 편지에서 예방접종을 맞던 과정을 멋진 과장을 섞어 이렇게 썼습니다. “군의관 두 명이 작살을 들고 쫓아오더군요. 그리고는 우릴 붙잡아 바닥에 꼼짝 못하게 만들고는 양쪽 팔에 한 방씩 꽂아 넣었어요.”
그런데 한 병사는 유머에도 한계가 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그러다 성경 한 권을 받게 되었습니다. 그는 이렇게 편지 했습니다. “나는 성경이 너무 좋아서 매일 밤 읽습니다. 성경에 그렇게 배울 것이 많은 줄 몰랐습니다.”
오래 전 유배당한 유대인들이 바벨론에서 오랜 노예생활을 끝내고 귀국해보니 숱한 문제들이 그들 앞에 놓여 있었습니다. 예루살렘 성벽을 재건하기 위해 애쓰던 그들은 적들과 기근과 그들 자신의 죄라는 장애물에 부딪혔습니다. 이런 어려움 속에서 하나님의 말씀으로 돌아온 그들은 말씀에서 배운 것에 크게 놀라워했습니다. 제사장들이 하나님의 율법 책을 읽자 사람들은 감격하여 눈물을 흘렸습니다(느 8:9). 그러나 위안도 얻었습니다. 느헤미야 총독은 그들에게 “근심하지 말라 여호와로 인하여 기뻐하는 것이 너희의 힘이니라”(10절)라고 말했습니다.
우리는 힘든 일이 닥치고 나서야 하나님의 말씀을 들을 필요가 없습니다. 바로 성경에서 하나님의 성품과 용서하심과 평안을 얻을 수 있습니다. 성경을 읽을 때 우리는 성령님이 각 페이지마다 보여주시는 것에 놀라게 될 것입니다.
• 주님, 어려움을 만나서가 아니라 언제 어디서나 주님을 찾게 하소서. 사랑이신 당신의 품성을 매일 가르쳐 주시니 감사합니다.
* 성경은 우리의 참 모습과 하나님이 우리를 얼마나 많이 사랑하시는지를 알게 해준다.
5. 에스라가 모든 백성 위에 서서 그들 목전에 책을 펴니 책을 펼 때에 모든 백성이 일어서니라
6. 에스라가 위대하신 하나님 여호와를 송축하매 모든 백성이 손을 들고 아멘 아멘 하고 응답하고 몸을 굽혀 얼굴을 땅에 대고 여호와께 경배하니라
7. 예수아와 바니와 세레뱌와 야민과 악굽과 사브대와 호디야와 마아세야와 그리다와 아사랴와 요사밧과 하난과 블라야와 레위 사람들은 백성이 제자리에 서 있는 동안 그들에게 율법을 깨닫게 하였는데
8. 하나님의 율법책을 낭독하고 그 뜻을 해석하여 백성에게 그 낭독하는 것을 다 깨닫게 하니
9. 백성이 율법의 말씀을 듣고 다 우는지라 총독 느헤미야와 제사장 겸 학사 에스라와 백성을 가르치는 레위 사람들이 모든 백성에게 이르기를 오늘은 너희 하나님 여호와의 성일이니 슬퍼하지 말며 울지 말라 하고
10. 느헤미야가 또 그들에게 이르기를 너희는 가서 살진 것을 먹고 단 것을 마시되 준비하지 못한 자에게는 나누어 주라 이 날은 우리 주의 성일이니 근심하지 말라 여호와로 인하여 기뻐하는 것이 너희의 힘이니라 하고
11. 레위 사람들도 모든 백성을 정숙하게 하여 이르기를 오늘은 성일이니 마땅히 조용하고 근심하지 말라 하니
12. 모든 백성이 곧 가서 먹고 마시며 나누어 주고 크게 즐거워하니 이는 그들이 그 읽어 들려 준 말을 밝히 앎이라

Far from home and training for World War II, American recruits in basic training turned to humor and correspondence to cope with the challenges they faced. In one letter home a young man described the vaccination process with wonderful exaggeration: “Two medical officers chased us with harpoons. They grabbed us and pinned us to the floor and stuck one in each arm.”
Yet one soldier began to realize that humor could only take him so far. Then he received a Bible. “I enjoy it very much and I read it every night,” he wrote. “I never realized you could learn so much from a Bible.”
Long ago, the Jewish exiles returned home after years of slavery in Babylon to find their problems came with them. As they struggled to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls, they faced opposition from enemies, famine, and their own sin. Amid their trouble, they turned to God’s Word. They were surprised at what they learned. When the priests read from the Book of the Law of God, the people were moved to tears(Nehemiah 8:9). But they also found comfort. Nehemiah the governor told them, “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength”(v. 10).
We don’t need to wait for trouble to hear from God. The Bible is where we learn about His character, His forgiveness, and His comfort. As we read it, we’ll be surprised at what God’s Spirit will show us in its pages. Tim Gustafson

5. Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up.
6. Ezra praised the LORD, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, "Amen! Amen!" Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
7. The Levites -- Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah -- instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there.
8. They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was being read.
9. Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, "This day is sacred to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep." For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
10. Nehemiah said, "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
11. The Levites calmed all the people, saying, "Be still, for this is a sacred day. Do not grieve."
12. Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.
