하늘이 하나님의 영광을 선포하고 궁창이 그 손으로 하신 일을 나타내는도다- 시편 19:1
내 어린 시절의 영웅은 미국의 서부 개척자 데이비 크로켓이었습니다. 「데이비 크로켓: 그의 삶과 모험」이라는 책을 보면, 그가 창조주 하나님을 찬양하지 않을 수 없을만큼 아름다운 풍경과 마주치는 얘기가 나옵니다. 저자는 그것을 이렇게 표현하고 있습니다. “작은 숲 바로 너머에 나무가 없는 또 다른 광활한 초원이 펼쳐졌다. 거기에는 아주 많은 꽃들이 너무나 아름답고 찬란하게 피어 있어서, 경건한 분위기에는 전혀 익숙지 않았던 크로켓 대령조차도 말을 세우고 그 광경을 바라보며 이렇게 외쳤다. ‘오, 하나님, 인간을 위해 이렇게도 아름다운 세상을 만드셨다니요! 그런데 인간은 당신께 어찌 이리도 인색한지요! 우리는 당신이 우리에게 해주신 일에 감사할 줄 모릅니다.’”크로켓은 우리가 소홀히 여기거나 무시하는 창조주의 작품에 반드시 감사해야 한다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 우리는 감사하는 일에 소홀하거나 무지합니다.

시편기자는 “하늘이 하나님의 영광을 선포하고 궁창이 그의 손으로 하신 일을 나타내는도다”(시 19:1)라고 기록하였습니다. 하나님이 손으로 만드신 그 장엄한 광경은, 우리가 제대로 이해한다면 숨막히는 감동을 줄 뿐 아니라, 그 감동 때문에 시편 기자처럼 우리도 하나님을 찬양하고 예배하지 않을 수 없을 것입니다.

데이비 크로켓이 옳았습니다. 하나님이 지으신 놀라운 세상을 보면 최소한 감사하는 마음이 일어나야 합니다. 우리는 감사하고 있습니까?
  
    
하나님이 궁창에 널리 창조물을 펼치셨네
별을 만드시고 지구의 기초를 세우셨네
그분의 힘과 능력은 우리의 예배와 경외심을 요구하시나
갈보리의 십자가가 우리를 자유케 하여 더 가까이 부르시네
 
 
 
하나님의 영광은 그분의 창조를 통해 빛이 난다.
  
시편 19:1-6

[1] [다윗의 시, 영장으로 한 노래] 하늘이 하나님의 영광을 선포하고 궁창이 그 손으로 하신 일을 나타내는도다
[2] 날은 날에게 말하고 밤은 밤에게 지식을 전하니
[3] 언어가 없고 들리는 소리도 없으나
[4] 그 소리가 온 땅에 통하고 그 말씀이 세계 끝까지 이르도다 하나님이 해를 위하여 하늘에 장막을 베푸셨도다
[5] 해는 그 방에서 나오는 신랑과 같고 그 길을 달리기 기뻐하는 장사 같아서
[6] 하늘 이 끝에서 나와서 하늘 저 끝까지 운행함이여 그 온기에서 피하여 숨은 자 없도다
 
A HEART OF GRATITUDE

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. - Psalm 19:1
My boyhood hero was American frontiersman Davy Crockett. In the book David Crockett: His Life and Adventures, Davy encounters a beau-tiful sight that causes him to launch into praise to the Creator. The writer describes it this way: “Just beyond the grove there was another expanse of treeless prairie, so rich, so beautiful, so brilliant with flowers, that even Colonel Crockett, all unaccustomed as he was to the devotional mood, reined in his horse, and gazing entranced upon the landscape, exclaimed, ‘O God, what a world of beauty hast Thou made for man! And yet how poorly does he requite Thee for it! He does not even repay Thee with grati-tude.’” Crockett recognized that the Creator’s handiwork demands a response of thankfulness- a response that is often neglected or ignored.

The psalmist wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork”(Ps.19:1). God’s handiwork is a spectacle that, rightly understood, should not only take our breath away but should inspire us to worship and praise our God as it did the psalmist.

Davy Crockett was right-encountering the wonders of God’s creation should inspire, at the least, a heart of grati-tude. Are we grateful? - Bill Crowder

Psalm 19:1-6

[1] To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
[2] Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge.
[3] There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard.
[4] Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun,
[5] Which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, And rejoices like a strong man to run its race.
[6] Its rising is from one end of heaven, And its circuit to the other end; And there is nothing hidden from its heat.
