목적이 이끄는 삶 part 3 - 세번째 목적 : 우리는 그리스도를 닮도록 창조되었다

DAY 22 - 그리스도를 닮도록 창조되었다

"하나님이 미리 정하신 자들로 또한 그 아들의 형상을 본받게 하기 위하여
미리 정하셨으니 이는 그로 많은 형제 중에서 맏아들이 되게 하려 하심이니라" (롬 8:29).
"우리는 그 아들을 보고 모든 창조물 속에 있는 하나님의 목적을 안다"  (골 1:15,Msg).


우리는 그리스도를 닮도록 창조되었다.

처음부터 하나님의 계획은 우리를 당신의 아들 예수님처럼 만드는 것이었다. 이것이 우리의 운명이고 우리 삶의 세번째 목적이다. 하나님은 우리를 만드실 때 이 의도를 말씀하셨다. "우리의 형상을 따라 우리의 모양대로 우리가 사람을 만들고"(창 1:26).

모든 피조물 가운데 인간만이 `하나님의 형상대로` 창조되었다. 이것은 위대한 특권이며 우리에게 존엄성을 부여해주는 일이다. 우리는 이것이 의미하는 바를 모두 알지 못하지만, 함축되어 있는 몇 가지 측면은 알고 있다. 하나님처럼 우리도 영적인 존재다. 우리의 영은 죽지 않고, 우리의 몸이 사라져도 영은 남을 것이다. 우리는 지적인 존재다. 우리는 생각하고, 논리에 따라 사고하며, 문제를 해결한다. 또한 우리는 하나님처럼 관계를 중시한다. 우리는 진정한 사랑을 주고 받는다. 그리고 우리는 도덕적인 의식을 가지고 있다.  그래서 우리는 선악을 구분하고, 이 때문에 우리는 하나님에 앞에 책임을 가지고 있다.

성경은 믿는 사람뿐 아니라 모든 사람이 하나님의 형상을 부분적으로나마 가지고 있다고 말한다. 그렇기에 살인과 낙태는 잘못된 행동이다. 하지만 그 형상이 완전하지 않고 죄에 의해 손상되고 왜곡되었다(창 6:9, 시 139:13-16, 약 3:9). 그래서 하나님은 우리가 잃어버린 완전한 형상을 다시 찾도록 하기 위해서 이 땅에 예수님을 보내셨다.

완전한 `하나님의 모습, 하나님의 형상` 은 어떤 것일까? 그것은 예수 그리스도의 모습이다. 성경은 예수님이 `하나님과 완전히 일치한다` 라고 말하고 있고 `보이지 않는 하나님의 형상` `그의 존재의 완전한 묘사(고후 4:4, 골 1:15, 히 1:3 - NIV)` 라고 말한다.

사람들은 가족이 서로 닮은 모습을 표현할 때 `부전자전` 이라는 말을 쓴다. 사람들이 내 아이들의 모습에서 나와 닮은 모습을 발견하면 기분이 좋듯이, 하나님 역시 당신의 자녀들이 자신의 형상과 모습을 지니고 있기를 바라신다. 성경은 이렇게 말한다. "하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라"(엡 4:24).

그러나, 절대로 오해하지 말아야할 사실이 있다.  그것은 우리가 절대로 하나님이 될 수 없고 어떤 신도 될 수 없다는 사실이다. 이것이야말로 교만으로 인한 거짓말이고 지금까지 사탄이 가장 오래 사용하고 있는 유혹이다. 사탄은 아담과 하와에게 그의 충고를 들으면 "하나님과 같이 될 것"(창 3:5)이라고 말했다. 오늘날 많은 종교와 뉴에이지 철학은 우리가 신성을 지닐 수 있다든지, 아니면 신이 될 수 있다는 그 오래된 거짓말을 여전히 하고 있다.

신이 되고자 하는 이 욕구는 우리가 우리의 상황, 미래 그리고 주위의 사람들을 통제하려고 할 때 나타난다. 하지만 피조물로서 우리는 절대로 창조주가 될 수 없고 하나님은 우리가 신이 되기를 원하지 않으신다. 대신 우리가 그분의 도덕적 성격을 지닌 하나님을 닮은 사람이 되기를 원하신다. 우리는 이렇게 해야 한다. "너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 좇는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고 오직 심령으로 새롭게 되어 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라"(엡 4:22,24).

이 땅에서 하나님이 우리의 삶에 대해 가지고 계신 궁극적인 목적은 편안한 삶이 아니라 그리스도와 같은 인격이다. 하나님은 우리가 영적으로 성장하여 그리스도와 같이 되기를 바라신다. 그러나 그리스도와 같이 된다는 것이 우리의 모든 성격을 버리고 생각 없는 복제물이 되는 것은 아니다. 하나님은 우리에게 각각 독특한 성격을 주셨고, 그래서 우리가 그것을 버리는 것을 원하지 않으신다. 그리스도를 닮는 것은 성격을 바꾸는 것이 아니다. 인격을 개발하는 것이다.

하나님은 우리가 예수님의 산상수훈(마 5:1-12), 성령의 열매(갈 5:22-23), 사랑에 관한 바울의 위대한 장(고전 13장), 그리고 효과적이고 생산적인 삶을 위한 베드로의 인격 리스트(벧후 1:5-8)에 묘사되어 있는 인격을 개발하기 원하신다. 이 사실을 잊을 때마다 우리는 삶에 대해 절망 할 것이다. 왜 이런 일이 나에게 일어나고 있는가? 왜 하나님은 나의 기도에 응답하지 않으시는가? 왜 나는 이런 시련과 고난을 겪어야 하는가? 그러나 삶은 처음부터 어렵도록 만들어졌다. 그래야 우리가 성장할 수 있기 때문이다. 이 땅이 천국이 아님을 기억하라.

많은 크리스천들은 예수님의 `풍요로운 삶에 대한 약속` (요 10:10)을 잘못 해석한다. 그것이 완벽한 건강, 편안한 삶의 방식, 끊임없는 행복, 꿈의 실현 그리고 믿음과 기도를 통한 빠른 해결이기를 기대한다. 한마디로 그들은 크리스천의 삶이 이 땅에서 천국의 삶을 누리는 것이라 기대한다.

이러한 자기 도취의 관점은 하나님을 단순히 우리의 이기적인 만족을 채워주기 위해 존재하는 요정쯤으로 취급하게 한다. 하나님은 우리의 종이 아니시다. 만약 우리가 삶이 쉬운 것으로 되어 졌다는 생각에 빠진다면 우리는 삶에 대해 심한 환멸을 느끼거나, 현실을 부정하며 살게 될 것이다.

삶이 우리에 대한 것이 아님을 잊지 말라. 우리가 하나님의 목적을 위해 존재하는 것이지 그 반대가 아니다. 하나님이 영생에서 우리를 위한 진짜 삶을 계획해 놓으셨는데 왜 이 땅에서 천국과 같은 삶을 주시겠는가? 이 땅에서의 삶은 천국에서의 삶을 위해 우리의 인격을 쌓고, 강화하기위해 주신 것이다.


하나님의 영이 우리 안에서 역사하고 있다

우리 안에 그리스도를 닮은 성품을 만드는 것은 성령님의 일이다. 성경은 이렇게 말한다. "우리가 다 수건을 벗은 얼굴로 거울을 보는 것같이 주의 영광을 보매 저와 같은 형상으로 화하여 영광으로 영광에 이르니 곧 주의 영으로 말미암음이니라"(고후 3:18). 우리가 더욱 예수님을 닮아가는 이 과정을 성화라고 부른다. 이것이 우리 삶의 세번째 목적이다. 우리 스스로 예수님의 성품을 만들고 개발할 수 없다. 새해 새 결심, 의지 그리고 좋은 의도로는 충분하지 않다. 하나님이 우리 삶에서 보고 싶어하시는 변화를 일으킬수 있는 힘은 오직 성령님만이 가지고 계시다. 성경은 이렇게 말한다. "너희 안에서 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희로 소원을 두고 행하게 하시나니"(빌 2:13).

`성령님의 힘` 이라는 말을 들으면 많은 사람들은 기적적인 일이나 격렬한 감정을 생각한다. 하지만 대부분의 경우 성령님의 힘은 우리의 삶에서 조용하게 그리고 예측치 못하게 역사하시기  때문에 우리가 알아차리거나 느낄 수 없다. 그분은 `조용하고 부드러운 목소리` (왕상 19:12, 쉬운성경)로 우리를 가볍게 건드리신다.

그리스도를 닮는 것은 모방이 아니라 거함으로써 나타나는 것이다. 즉 그리스도가 우리를 통해 사시게 하는 것이다. "이 비밀은 너희 안에 계신 그리스도시니" (골 1:27). 이것이 실제 생활에서 어떻게 일어나는가? 우리가 하는 선택을 통해서 일어난다. 우리는 그 상황에서 적합한 것을 선택하여 행동하고, 성령님이 그것을 위한 힘, 사랑, 믿음 그리고 지혜를 주실 것을 믿는 것이다. 성령님이 우리 안에 살고 계시기 때문에 우리가 그것들을 구하기만 한다면 항상 얻을 수 있다.


우리는 성령님의 역사 하심에 협력해야 한다

성경을 통해 계속 설명되는 중요한 진리를 우리는 알아야 하는데 이는 성령님은 우리가 믿음의 발걸음을 옮기는 그 순간에 힘을 드러내신다는 것이다. 여호수아가 요단 강이라는 넘어갈 수 없는 벽을 만났을 때 지도자들이 순종과 믿음으로 흐르는 물에 발을 담근 후에야 강물이 약해졌다(수 3:13-17). 순종은 하나님의 능력을 불러온다.

하나님은 우리가 먼저 행동하기를 기다리시기 때문에 우리에게 힘이 생기거나 확신이 들 때까지 기다리지 말라. 약점이 있어도 행동하라. 두려움과 감정에 상관없이 옳은 일을 하라. 이것이 성령님과 협력하고 우리의 인격이 세워지는 방법이다.

성경은 영적인 성장을 설명하면서 이를 씨앗, 건물 그리고 자라나는 아이에 비유했다. 그런데 각 비유는 능동적인 참여를 요구한다. 씨앗은 심어서 가꾸어야 하고, 건물도 사람이 지어야 한다. 그냥 세워지지 않는다. 아이들은 성장하기 위해 먹고 운동을 해야 한다.

구원은 우리의 노력으로 되는 것이 아니지만, 영적인 성장은 우리가 노력해야 얻을 수 있다. 신약 성경에 예수님을 닮아 성장하는 데에 `힘쓰라( 눅 13:24, 롬 14:19, 엡 4:3, 딤후 2:15-NCV, 히 4:11, 벧후 1:5, 3:14)` 는 말이 적어도 여덟 번 등장한다. 그냥 앉아서 성장하기를 기다리는 것이 아니다.

바울은 에베소서 4장 22-24절에서 그리스도와 같아지기 위해 우리가 져야할 세 가지 책임에 대해 설명한다.

첫째, 우리는 옛날의 행동방식을 버려야한다 – 옛날의 속한 생활방식은 철저히 버려야한다. 그것은 완전히 썩어버린 것이다. "너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 좇는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고"(엡 4:22).

둘째, 우리는 사고 방식을 바꾸어야 한다. "성령님이 너의 사고 방식을 변화 시키도록 하라"(엡 4:23, CEV). 성경은 우리가 마음을 새롭게 함으로 새로워진다고 말한다(롬 12:2). 변화(transformed)의 그리스 어원은 로마서 12장 2절과 고린도후서 3장 18절에서 사용된 metamorphosis 이다. 이 단어는 오늘날 나비 유충이 나비가 되기 위해 거치는 엄청난 변화를 묘사하는 데 사용 된다. 하나님이 우리의 사고를 인도하시도록 할 때 우리에게 일어나는 영적인 변화는 매우 아름답다. 그리고 우리는 새로운 곳으로 높이 치솟을 수 있도록 자유롭다.

셋째, 우리는 새롭고 거룩한 습관을 발전시킴으로 그리스도의 성품을 `입어야` 한다. 우리의 성품은 습관을 모두 모아놓은 것이기 때문에 우리가 습관적으로 어떻게 행동하는지를 보여준다. 성경은 이렇게 말한다. "하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라" (엡 4:24).


하나님은 우리의 변화를 위해 당신의 말씀, 사람들 그리고 상황을 이용하신다

이 세 가지 모두는 인격을 개발시키기 위해 꼭 필요한 것들이다. 하나님의 말씀은 우리가 성장하는 데 필요한 진리를 공급해주고, 하나님의 사람들은 우리가 성장하는 데 필요한 지원을 해준다. 그리고 상황은 그리스도와 닮은 모습을 실천할 수 있는 환경을 만들어준다. 만일 하나님의 말씀을 공부하고, 적용하며, 다른 믿는 사람들과 정기적으로 연락하고, 어려운 상황속에서도 하나님을 신뢰하는 것을 배운다면 우리는 예수님의 모습에 더욱 가까워 질 것이다. 우리는 성장에 필요한 이 요소들을 앞으로 각각 살펴볼 것이다.

많은 사람들이 영적인 성장을 위해 필요한 것은 성경 공부와 기도가 전부라고 생각하지만, 우리 삶에는 성경 공부와 기도만으로는 절대 바뀌지 않을 것들이 있다. 하나님은 사람들을 사용 하신다. 기적을 통해서가 아니라 사람을 통해 일하는 것을 선호하신다. 그래서 우리가 교제를 통해 서로 의지하고 이로 인해 우리가 함께 성장하기를 바라시는 것이다.

많은 종교들에서, 사람들은 영적으로 가장 성숙하고 거룩한 사람들은 다른 사람들과의 접촉이 없는, 산꼭대기 수도원에 홀로 고립된 사람들이라 생각한다. 하지만 이것은 엄청난 오해다. 영적인 성숙은 혼자, 개인적으로 추구하는 것이 아니다. 혼자서는 그리스도처럼 성숙할 수 없다. 다른 사람들과 함께하고 그들과 서로 영향을 주고받아야 한다. 우리는 교회나 사회의 일원이 되어야 한다. 왜일까? 영적인 성숙은 그리스도처럼 사랑하는 것을 배우는 것이므로 혼자서는 이룰 수 없기 때문이다. 그리고 다른 사람들과 교제하지 않으면 예수님처럼 되는 것을 연습할 수 없기 때문이다. 하나님과 다른 사람들을 사랑하는 것이 전부라는 것을 기억하라.


예수님처럼 되는 것은 길고 느린 성장의 과정이다

영적인 성숙은 즉각적이거나 자동적으로 일어나지 않는다. 우리의 남은 삶 동안 계속 이루어질 점차적인 발달 과정이다. 이에 대해 바울은 이렇게 말했다. "우리가 다 하나님의 아들을 믿는 것과 아는 일에 하나가 되어 온전한 사람을 이루어 그리스도의 장성한 분량이 충만한 데까지 이르리니"(엡 4:13).

우리는 아직 과정중에 있다. 우리가 그리스도와 닮아가는 영적인 변화의 과정은 평생 걸릴 것이고, 이 땅에서는 완성되지 않을 것이다. 우리가 천국에 갈 때 또는 예수님이 다시 오실 때 완성될 것이다. 그때, 아직 끝나지 않은 일이 무엇이든 간에 모두 마무리 될 것이다. 성경은 우리가 결국 예수님을 완벽하게 볼 수 있을 때 우리는 완전히 그분과 같아질 수 있다고 말한다." 사랑하는 자들아 우리가 지금은 하나님의 자녀라 장래에 어떻게 될 것은 아직 나타나지 아니하였으나 그가 나타내심이 되면 우리가 그와 같은 줄을 아는 것은 그의 계신 그대로 볼 것을 인함이니" (요일 3:2).

크리스천으로서 살아가는 데 많은 혼란을 겪는 이유는 다음의 단순한 한 가지 사실을 간과해서 생기는 것이다. 하나님은 그 무엇보다 우리의 인격을 쌓는 데에 아주 많은 관심을 갖고 계시다는 점이다. 우리는 `어떤 직업을 선택해야 하는가?`와 같은 문제에 대해 하나님이 침묵하실때 걱정을 한다. 그러나 우리 삶에 대한 하나님의 뜻 가운데는 여러 다른 직업이 있다는 사실을 간과해서는 안 된다. 하나님이 가장 중요하게 여기시는 것은 우리가 무엇을 하든 그리스도와 같은 태도로 임하는 것이다(고전 10:31, 16:14, 골 3:17, 23).

하나님은 우리가 무엇을 하는지(doing) 보다는 어떤 사람인지(being)에 더 관심을 두신다. 사람은 그 존재 자체로서 중요하다. 그리고 하나님은 우리의 직업보다는 우리의 성품을 더 많이 생각하신다. 이는 우리가 영생으로 갈 때 가지고 가는 것은 직업이 아닌 성품이기 때문이다.

성경은 이렇게 경고한다. "너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라" (롬 12:2). 그리스도를 더 닮아가는 데 초점을 맞추려면 문화를 거스르는 결정을 내려야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 친구, 부모, 동료, 그리고 문화와 같은 다른 힘이 우리를 그들의 모습으로 만들려고 할 것이다.

슬프게도 많은 기독교 서적을 보면 수많은 크리스천들이 하나님의 위대한 목적을 버리고 개인적인 만족과 감정의 안정을 위해 살고 있다는 것을 알게 된다. 이것은 제자도가 아닌 나르시시즘(narcissism)이다. 예수님은 우리가 이 땅에서 편안하게, 잘 적응하여 살게 하시려고 십자가에서 돌아가신 것이 아니다. 그분의 목적은 그보다 훨씬 깊다. 그분은 우리를 천국에 데려가시기전에 우리를 그리스도와 같은 모습으로 만들기 원하셨다. 이것이 우리의 가장 큰 특권이고, 즉각적으로 수행해야 할 책임이며, 우리가 궁극적으로 가야 할 종착점이다.

22 Created to Become Like Christ

God knew what he was doing from the very beginning. He decided from the outset
to shape the lives of those who love him along the same lines as the life of his Son....
We see the original and intended shape of our lives there in him. Romans 8:29 (Msg)
We look at this Son and see God's original purpose in everything created.  Colossians 1:15 (Msg)


You were created to become like Christ.

From the very beginning, God's plan has been to make you like His Son, Jesus. This is your destiny and the third purpose of your life. God announced this intention at Creation: "Then God said, `Let us make human beings in our image and likeness."

In all of creation, only human beings are made "in God's image." This is a great privilege and gives us dignity. We don't know all this phrase covers, but we do know some of the aspects it includes: Like God, we are spiritual beings-our spirits are immortal and will outlast our earthly bodies; we are intellectual-we can think, reason, and solve problems; like God, we are relational - we can give and receive real love; and we have a moral consciousness-we can discern right from wrong, which makes us accountable to God.

The Bible says that all people, not just believers, possess part of the image of God; that is why murder and abortion are wrong. But the image is incomplete and has been damaged and distorted by sin. So God sent Jesus on a mission to restore the full image that we have lost.

What does the full "image and likeness" of God look like? It looks like Jesus Christ! The Bible says Jesus is "the exact likeness of God," "the visible image of the invisible God," and "the exact representation of his being."

People often use the phrase "like father, like son" to refer to family resemblance. When people see my likeness in my kids, it pleases me. God wants his children to bear his image and likeness, too. The Bible says, "You were ... created to be like God, truly righteous and holy."

Let me be absolutely clear: You will never become God, or even a god. That prideful lie is Satan's oldest temptation. Satan promised Adam and Eve that if they followed his advice, "ye shall be as gods." Many religions and New Age philosophies still promote this old lie that we are divine or can become gods.

This desire to be a god shows up every time we try to control our circumstances, our future, and people around us. But as creatures, we will never be the Creator. God doesn't want you to become a god; he wants you to become godly-taking on his values, attitudes, and character. The Bible says, "Take on an entirely new way of life-a God fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you."

God's ultimate goal for your life on earth is not comfort, but character development. He wants you to grow up spiritually and become like Christ. Becoming like Christ does not mean losing your personality or becoming a mindless clone. God created your uniqueness, so he certainly doesn't want to destroy it. Christlikeness is all about transforming your character, not your personality.

God wants you to develop the kind of character described in the beatitudes of Jesus,' the fruit of the Spirit, Paul's great chapter on love, and Peter's list of the characteristics of an effective and productive life. Every time you forget that character is one of God's purposes for your life, you will become frustrated by your circumstances. You'll wonder, "Why is this happening to me? Why am I having such a difficult time?" One answer is that life is supposed to be difficult! It's what enables us to grow. Remember, earth is not heaven!

Many Christians misinterpret Jesus' promise of the "abundant life" to mean perfect health, a comfortable lifestyle, constant happiness, full realization of your dreams, and instant relief from problems through faith and prayer. In a word, they expect the Christian life to be easy. They expect heaven on earth.

This self-absorbed perspective treats God as a genie who simply exists to serve you in your selfish pursuit of personal fulfillment. But God is not your servant, and if you fall for the idea that life is supposed to be easy, either you will become severely disillusioned or you will live in denial of reality.

Never forget that life is not about you! You exist for God's purposes, not vice versa. Why would God provide heaven on earth when he's planned the real thing for you in eternity? God gives us our time on earth to build and strengthen our character for heaven. God's ultimate goal for your life on earth is not comfort, but character development.

GOD'S SPIRIT WORKING IN YOU

It is the Holy Spirit's job to produce Christ-like character in you. The Bible says, "As the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more. This process of changing us to be more like Jesus is called sanctification, and it is the third purpose of your life on earth.

You cannot reproduce the character of Jesus on your own strength. New Year's resolutions, willpower, and best intentions are not enough. Only the Holy Spirit has the power to make the changes God wants to make in our lives. The Bible says, "God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him."

Mention "the power of the Holy Spirit," and many people think of miraculous demonstrations and intense emotions. But most of the time the Holy Spirit's power is released in your life in quiet, unassuming ways that you aren't even aware of or can't feel. He often nudges us with "a gentle whisper."

Christlikeness is not produced by imitation, but by inhabitation. We allow Christ to live through us. "For this is the secret: Christ lives in you."' How does this happen in real life? Through the choices we make. We choose to do the right thing in situations and then trust God's Spirit to give us his power, love, faith, and wisdom to do it. Since God's Spirit lives inside of us, these things are always available for the asking.

We must cooperate with the Holy Spirit's work. Throughout the Bible we see an important truth illustrated over and over: The Holy Spirit releases his power the moment you take a step of faith. When Joshua was faced with an impassible barrier, the floodwaters of the Jordan River receded only after the leaders stepped into the rushing current in obedience and faith.' Obedience unlocks God's power.

God waits for you to act first. Don't wait to feel powerful or confident. Move ahead in your weakness, doing the right thing in spite of your fears and feelings. This is how you cooperate with the Holy Spirit, and it is how your character develops.

The Bible compares spiritual growth to a seed, a building, and a child growing up. Each metaphor requires active participation: Seeds must be planted and cultivated, buildings must be built-they don't just appear-and children must eat and exercise to grow.

While effort has nothing to do with your salvation, it has much to do with your spiritual growth. At least eight times in the New Testament we are told to "make every effort" in our growth toward becoming like Jesus. You don't just sit around and wait for it to happen.

Paul explains in Ephesians 4:22-24 our three responsibilities in becoming like Christ. First, we must choose to let go of old ways of acting. "Everything ... connected with that old way of life has to go. It's rotten through and through. Get rid of it!"

Second, we must change the way we think. "Let the Spirit change your way of thinking." The Bible says we are "transformed" by the renewing of our minds. The Greek word for transformed, metamorphosis (used in Romans 12:2 and 2 Corinthians 3:18), is used today to describe the amazing change a caterpillar goes through in becoming a butterfly. It is a beautiful picture of what happens to us spiritually when we allow God to direct our thoughts: We are changed from the inside out, we become more beautiful, and we are set free to soar to new heights.

Third, we must "put on" the character of Christ by developing new, godly habits. Your character is essentially the sum of your habits; it is how you habitually act. The Bible says, "Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.'

God uses his Word, people, and circumstances to mold us. All three are indispensable for character development. G      od's Word provides the truth we need to grow, God's people provide the support we need to grow, and circumstances provide the environment we need to practice Christlikeness. If you study and apply God's Word, connect regularly with other believers, and learn to trust God in difficult circumstances, I guarantee you will become more like Jesus. We will look at each of these growth ingredients in the chapters ahead.

Many people assume all that is needed for spiritual growth is Bible study and prayer. But some issues in life will never be changed by Bible study or prayer alone. God uses people. He usually prefers to work through people rather than perform miracles, so that we will depend on each other for fellowship. He wants us to grow together.

In many religions, the people considered to be the most spiritually mature and holy are those who isolate themselves from others in mountaintop monasteries, uninfected by contact with other people. But this is a gross misunderstanding. Spiritual maturity is not a solitary, individual pursuit! You cannot grow to Christlikeness in isolation. You must be around other people and interact with them. You need to be a part of a church and community. Why? Because true spiritual maturity is all about learning to love like Jesus, and you can't practice being like Jesus without being in relationship with other people. Remember, it's all about love-loving God and loving others.

Becoming like Christ is a long, slow process of growth. Spiritual maturity is neither instant nor automatic: it is a gradual, progressive development that will take the rest of your life. Referring to this process, Paul said, "This will continue until we are ... mature, just as Christ is, and we will be completely like him.'

You are a work in progress. Your spiritual transformation in developing the character of Jesus will take the rest of your life, and even then it won't be completed here on earth. It will only be finished when you get to heaven or when Jesus returns. At that point, whatever unfinished work on your character is left will be wrapped up. The Bible says that when we are finally able to see Jesus perfectly, we will become perfectly like him: "We can't even imagine what we will be like when Christ returns. But we do know that when he comes we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is."

Much confusion in the Christian life comes from ignoring the simple truth that God is far more interested in building your character than he is anything else. We worry when God seems silent on specific issues such as "What career should I choose?" The truth is, there are many different careers that could be in God's will for your life. What God cares about most is that whatever you do, you do in a Christlike manner.

God is far more interested in what you are than in what you do. We are human beings, not human doings. God is much more concerned about your character than your career, because you will take your character into eternity, but not your career.

The Bible warns, "Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out.... Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well formed maturity in you." You must make a counter-culture decision to focus on becoming more like Jesus. Otherwise, other forces like peers, parents, coworkers, and culture will try to mold you into their image.

Sadly, a quick review of many popular Christian books reveals that many believers have abandoned living for God's great purposes and settled for personal fulfillment and emotional stability. That is narcissism, not discipleship. Jesus did not die on the cross just so we could live comfortable, well-adjusted lives. His purpose is far deeper: He wants to make us like himself before he takes us to heaven. This is our greatest privilege, our immediate responsibility, and our ultimate destiny.
