DAY8 - 하나님의 기쁨을 위해 계획되었다


“우리 주 하나님이여 영광과 존귀와 능력을 받으시는 것이 합당하오니
주께서 만물을 지으신지라 만물이 주의 뜻대로 있었고 또 지으심을 받았나이다” (계 4:11).

“여호와께서는 자기 백성을 기뻐하시며” (시 149:4).



우리는 하나님의 기쁨을 위해 계획되었다.

우리가 이 땅에 태어나던 그 순간 하나님은 보이지 않는 목격자로 그 자리에 계셨고 우리의 출생에 미소짓고 계셨다. 하나님은 우리가 이 땅에 살아 있기를 원하셨으며 우리가 태어난 것을 매우 기뻐하셨다. 하나님은 우리를 창조하실 필요가 없었다. 하지만 당신의 기쁨을 위해 우리를 창조하기로 선택하셨다. 그래서 하나님의 유익, 하나님의 영광, 하나님의 목적 그리고 하나님의 즐거움을 위해 우리는 존재한다.

하나님께 기쁨을 드리는 것, 그분의 목적을 위해 사는 것은 우리 삶의 첫번째 목적이다. 이 진리를 완전히 이해하면 우리 자신이 중요하지 않다고 느끼는 일은 거의 없을 것이다. 이 사실이 우리의 가치를 증명하기 때문이다. 우리가 하나님께 그토록 중요하고 그분이 영원히 함께하실 만큼 우리를 가치 있게 여기신다면 우리가 이보다 더 소중한 것을 가질 수 있을까? 우리는 하나님의 자녀이고 우리는 어떠한 피조물보다도 하나님께 많은 기쁨을 드린다. 성경은 이렇게 말한다. “그 기쁘신 뜻대로 우리를 예정하사 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 자기의 아들들이 되게 하셨으니”(엡 1:5).

하나님이 우리에게 주신 선물 가운데 가장 좋은 것은 기쁨을 누릴 수 있는 능력이다. 그분은 우리가 기쁨을 경험할 수 있도록 우리에게 오감과 감정을 주셨다. 우리가 기쁨을 누리고 즐거워할 수 있는 이유는 우리가 하나님의 형상을 따라 만들어졌기 때문이다.

우리는 자주 하나님께도 감정이 있다는 사실을 잊는다. 그분은 모든 것을 매우 깊게 느끼는 분이시다. 성경은 하나님이 슬퍼하시고, 질투하시며, 분노하시고, 기쁨, 즐거움, 만족뿐 아니라 동정, 연민 그리고 비애를 느끼신다고 말한다. 하나님은 사랑하시고, 즐거워하시고, 즐거워하시며, 기뻐하시고, 좋아하시며 심지어 웃기도 하신다(창 6:6, 출 20:5, 신 32:36, 대상 16:27, 왕상 10:9, 시 2:4, 5:5 , 18:19, 35:27, 37:23, 103:13, 104:31,겔 5:13, 요일 4:16).


하나님께 기쁨을 드리는 것을 ‘예배’라 부른다

성경은 이렇게 말한다. “주는 그를 예배하고 그의 사랑을 신뢰하는 자들을 기뻐하신다”(시 147:11, CEV).

하나님께 기쁨을 드리는 모든 행동이 예배다. 다이아몬드처럼 예배는 많은 다른 모습을 가지고 있다. 예배에 관한 모든 것을 이해하기 위해서는 몇 권의 책이 필요하겠지만, 이번 장에서는 예배에 대한 몇 가지 중요한 면만 살펴보기로 하자.

인류학자들은 사람들이 어느 문화권에서 살든지 본능적으로 무엇인가를 섬긴다는 것을 알았다. 이것은 누구에게나 다 신적인 존재와 연결되고 싶다는, 하나님이 인간 안에 만들어놓으신 우주적인 갈망이기 때문에 예배는 먹는 것 또는 숨쉬는 것과 마찬가지로 자연스러운 것이다. 하나님을 예배하지 못하면 우리는 항상 하나님 외의 대체물을 찾게 되고 대체물이 심지어 우리 자신이 되기도 한다. 하나님이 우리에게 이러한 욕구를 주신 것은 그분이 예배하는 자를 원하시기 때문이다. 예수님은 말씀하셨다. “어버지께서는 이렇게 자기에게 예배하는 자들을 찾으시느니라”(요 4:23).

종교적인 배경에 따라서 우리가 가지고 있는 ‘예배’ 에 대한 이해를 넓힐 필요가 있다. 어떤 사람은 찬양, 기도 그리고 설교가 있는 교회 예배 시간을 생각할 수도 있고, 또 어떤 사람은 의식, 촛불 그리고 성찬식을 생각할지도 모른다. 또는 치유, 기적 그리고 황홀한 경험들을 생각할 수도 있다. 예배는 이 모든 요소를 포함할 수 있지만, 이러한 표현들보다 훨씬 많은 것을 담고 있다. 예배는 삶의 방식 그 자체다.


예배는 음악 이상의 것이다

많은 사람들이 예배를 음악과 동의어로 생각해서 “우리 교회에서는 예배를 먼저 드리고 그 후에 가르침의 시간이 있어” 라고 말한다. 이것은 아주 큰 오해다. 예배 시간에 행해지는 모든 부분이 예배의 모습이다. 기도, 성경 봉독, 찬양, 고백, 침묵, 잠잠히 있는 것, 말씀을 듣는 것, 필기하는 것, 헌금, 세례, 성찬식, 헌신 카드 작성 그리고 심지어 다른 사람들에게 인사하는 것까지도.

사실 예배는 음악보다 먼저 생겼다. 아담은 에덴 동산에서 예배를 드렸지만 창세기 4장 21절에 유발의 출생 전까지 음악은 언급 되지 않는다. 만일 예배가 음악뿐이었다면 음악성이 없는 사람들은 어떻게 예배를 드릴 수 있을까? 예배는 음악 이상의 것이다.

이보다 더 심각한 경우에는 ‘예배’ 라는 단어가 특정 음악 스타일을 뜻하는 말로 오용되기도 한다. “처음엔 찬송가를 불렀고, 그 후에 찬양과 경배의 곡들을 불렀어.” 혹은 “나는 빠를 찬양곡도 좋아하지만, 느린 경배곡이 제일 좋아” 라고 말한다. 이것은 빠르거나 시끄럽거나 금관악기를 사용하는 것은 찬양(praise)이라고 하고, 느리고 조용하고 깊이 빠질 수 있는 때로는 기타가 반주로 사용되는 것은 경배(worship)라고 사용하는 잘못된 것이다. 이것은 흔히 볼 수 있는 ‘예배’의 오용 사례다.

예배는 스타일, 음량 혹은 곡의 속도와는 전혀 무관하다. 하나님은 노래가 빠르든 느리든, 시끄럽든 조용하든, 오래된 것이든 새로운 것이든, 하나님이 만드신 것이기에 모든 종류의 음악을 사랑하신다. 우리는 그 모두를 좋아하지 않을 수도 있지만, 하나님은 그 모두를 좋아하신다. 만약 예배가 신령과 진정으로 하나님께 드려진다면 그것이 예배의 모습인 것이다. 솔직히 말해, 우리가 가장 좋아하는 음악 스타일은 하나님에 대해서보다는 우리의 배경과 인격에 대해 알려준다. 한 민족의 음악이 다른 민족에게는 소음으로 들릴 수 있다. 하지만 하나님은 다양성을 좋아하시고 그 모든 것을 즐기신다.

‘크리스천’ 음악이라는 것은 없다. 단지 기독교적인 가사가 있을 뿐이다. 노래를 성스럽게 만드는 것은 음이 아니라 가사다. 영적인 음이라는 것은 존재하지 않는다. 내가 가사 없이 어떤 노래를 당신에게 연주해준다면 당신은 그것이 크리스천 음악인지 아닌지 구별할 방법이 없다.


예배는 우리의 유익을 위한 것이 아니다

목사로서 나는 “오늘 예배 아주 좋았습니다. 아주 많은 것을 얻었습니다” 라고 쓰여 있는 쪽지를 받곤 한다. 이것이 예배에 대한 또 하나의 잘못된 개념이다. 예배는 우리의 유익을 위한 것이 아니다. 우리는 하나님의 유익을 위해 예배한다. 우리가 예배를 드릴 때 우리의 목적은 우리 자신이 아닌 하나님께 드리는 것이다.

만일 “오늘 예배에서는 아무것도 얻지 못했어” 라고 말한 적이 있다면 그것은 잘못된 이유로 예배를 드린 것이다. 예배는 우리를 위한 것이 아니다. 하나님을 위한 것이다. 물론 예배에는 친교, 교육, 복음 전도의 요소가 포함되고, 예배를 드리는 유익도 있다. 하지만 우리 스스로를 기쁘게 하기 위해서 예배를 드리는 것이 아니다. 예배에 대한 우리의 동기는 우리의 창조주에게 영광과 기쁨을 드리는 것이다.

이사야 29장에서 하나님은 예배에 온 마음을 쏟지 않고 위선적으로 예배 드리는 것에 대해 불쾌함을 표현하셨다. 왜냐하면 그 당시 사람들이 하나님께 메마른 기도, 마음에서 우러나오지 않는 찬양, 아무 의미 없는 설교 그리고 의미조차 생각해보지 않은 사람이 만든 의식을 가지고 하나님께 제사를 드리고 있었기 때문이다. 하나님은 예배의 전통이 아닌 열정과 헌신으로 감동을 받으신다. 성경은 이렇게 말한다. “주께서 말씀하셨다. ‘이 백성이 그 입으로는 나를 존경한다고 말하지만 그 마음은 내게서 멀리 떨어져 있다. 그들이 나를 경배한다고 하지만, 그것은 사람들이 해오던 형식적으로 하는 것일 뿐이다’ “(사 29:13, 쉬운성경).


예배는 삶의 일부가 아니라 삶 그 자체다

교회에서 드리는 예배만이 예배가 아니다. 성경은 “계속해서 그를 예배하라”(시 105:4, TEV), “해뜰 때부터 해질 때까지 찬양 하라 “(시 113:3, TEV)고 말하고 있다. 또한 성경에는 많은 사람들이 직장에서, 집에서, 전쟁터에서, 감옥에서 그리고 심지어 침대에서 하나님을 찬양한 사실이 기록되어 있다. 그러므로 찬양은 아침에 눈을 떴을 때 처음 하는 행동이어야 하고, 밤에 눈감을 때 하는 마지막 행동 이어야 한다(시 5:3, 63:6, 119:62, 147). 이에 대해 다윗은 말한다. “내가 여호와를 항상 송축함이여 그를 송축함이 내 입에 계속 하리로다”(시 34:1).

우리가 어떤 활동을 하든지 그것이 하나님을 찬양하고 하나님께 영광과 기쁨을 드리기 위한 것이라면 그 모든 것이 예배가 될 수 있다. 성경은 이렇게 말한다. “그런즉 너희가 먹든지 마시든지 무엇을 하든지 다 하나님의 영광을 위하여 하라”(고전 10:31). 마틴 루터(Martin Luther)는 “우유 짜는 사람은 하나님의 영광을 위해 소젖을 짤 수 있다” 라고 말했다.

그러면 어떻게 모든 일을 하나님의 영광을 위해서 할 수 있는가? 모든 것을 예수님을 위한 것처럼 함으로써, 또 그것을 하는 동안 그분과 끊임없이 대화함으로써 할 수 있다. “무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라”(골 3:23)고 성경은 말하고 있다.

이것이 예배드리는 삶의 비밀이다. 모든 것을 주님께 하듯 하라. 하나님께 드리면 일도 예배가 된다. 그리고 그분의 임재를 느끼면서 행하라. 영어 성경 메시지(The Message)에서는 이렇게 표현한다. “매일의 일상 생활, 잠자는 것, 먹는 것, 일하러 가는 것 그리고 걸어다니는 것 모두를 하나님께 제물로 드려라”(롬 12:1).

내가 처음 아내와 사랑에 빠졌을 때 나는 끊임없이 그녀에 대해 생각했다. 아침 식사를 할 때, 학교에 갈 때, 수업 중에, 슈퍼마켓에서 줄 서 있을 때, 차에 기름을 넣을 때에도 나는 그녀에 대해 생각하는 것을 멈출 수 없었다. 나는 이따금 그녀에 관해 혼잣말을 하기도 했고, 내가 그녀를 좋아하는 부분들에 대해서 생각하기도 했다. 이와 같은 것들이 우리가 몇 백 킬로미터 떨어져 다른 학교에 다니고 있음에도 불구하고 서로를 가깝게 느낄 수 있는 방법이었다. 끊임없이 그녀에 대해 생각하면서 나는 그녀의 사랑 안에 머무르고 있었다. 예수님과 사랑에 빠지는 것, 이것이 진정한 예배다.

Planned for God's Pleasure

You created everything, and it is for your
pleasure that they exist and were created.

You were planned for God's pleasure.

The moment you were born into the world, God was there as an unseen witness, smiling at your birth. He wanted you alive, and your arrival gave him great pleasure. God did not need to create you, but he chose to create you for his own enjoyment. You exist for his benefit, his glory, his purpose, and his delight.

Bringing enjoyment to God, living for his pleasure, is the first purpose of your life. When you fully understand this truth, you will never again have a problem with feeling insignificant. It proves your worth. If you are that important to God, and he considers you valuable enough to keep with him for eternity, what greater significance could you have? You are a child of God, and you bring pleasure to God like nothing else he has ever created. The Bible says, "Because of his love God had already decided that through Jesus Christ he would make us his children-this was his pleasure and purpose.'

One of the greatest gifts God has given you is the ability to enjoy pleasure. He wired you with five senses and emotions so you can experience it. He wants you to enjoy life, not just endure it. The reason you are able to enjoy pleasure is that God made you in his image.

We often forget that God has emotions, too. He feels things very deeply. The Bible tells us that God grieves, gets jealous and angry, and feels compassion, pity, sorrow, and sympathy as well as happiness, gladness, and satisfaction. God loves, delights, gets pleasure, rejoices, enjoys, and even laughs!

Bringing pleasure to God is called "worship." The Bible says, "The LORD is pleased only with those who worship him and trust his love.'

Anything you do that brings pleasure to God is an act of worship. Like a diamond, worship is multifaceted. It would take volumes to cover all there is to understand about worship, but we will look at the primary aspects of worship in this section.

Anthropologists have noted that worship is a universal urge, hard-wired by God into the very fiber of our being-an inbuilt need to connect with God. Worship is as natural as eating or breathing. If we fail to worship God, we always find a substitute, even if it ends up being ourselves. The reason God made us with this desire is that he desires worshipers! Jesus said, "The Father seeks worshipers."

Depending on your religious background, you may need to expand your understanding of "worship." You may think of church services with singing, praying, and listening to a sermon. Or you may think of ceremonies, candles, and communion. Or you may think of healing, miracles, and ecstatic experiences. Worship can include these elements, but worship is far more than these expressions. Worship is a lifestyle.

Worship is far more than music. For many people, worship is just a synonym for music. They say, "At our church we have the worship first, and then the teaching." This is a big misunderstanding. Every part of a church service is an act of worship: praying, Scripture reading, singing, confession, silence, being still, listening to a sermon, taking notes, than music, giving an offering, baptism, communion, signing a commitment card, and even greeting other worshipers.

Actually, worship predates music. Adam worshiped in the Garden of Eden, but music isn't mentioned until Genesis 4:21 with the birth of Jubal. If worship were just music, then all who are nonmusical could never worship. Worship is far more than music.

Even worse, "worship" is often misused to refer to a particular style of music: "First we sang a hymn, then a praise and worship song." Or, "I like the fast praise songs but enjoy the slow worship songs the most." In this usage, if a song is fast or loud or uses brass instruments, it's considered "praise." But if it is slow and quiet and intimate, maybe accompanied by guitar, that's worship. This is a common misuse of the term "worship."

Worship has nothing to do with the style or volume or speed of a song. God loves all kinds of music because he invented it all-fast and slow, loud and soft, old and new. You probably don't like it all, but God does! If it is offered to God in spirit and truth, it is an act of worship.

Christians often disagree over the style of music used in worship, passionately defending their preferred style as the most biblical or God-honoring. But there is no biblical style! There are no musical notes in the Bible; we don't even have the instruments they used in Bible times.

Frankly, the music style you like best says more about you-your background and personality- than
it does about God. One ethnic group's music can sound like noise to another. But God likes variety and enjoys it all.

There is no such thing as "Christian" music; there are only Christian lyrics. It is the words that make a song sacred, not the tune. There are no spiritual tunes. If I played a song for you without the words, you'd have no way of knowing if it were a "Christian" song.

Worship is not for your benefit. As a pastor, I receive notes that say, "I loved the worship today. I got a lot out of it." This is another misconception about worship. It isn't for our benefit! We worship for God's benefit. When we worship, our goal is to bring pleasure to God, not ourselves.

If you have ever said, "I didn't get anything out of worship today," you worshiped for the wrong reason. Worship isn't for you. It's for God. Of course, most "worship" services also include elements of fellowship, edification, and evangelism, and there are benefits to worship, but we don't worship to please ourselves. Our motive is to bring glory and pleasure to our Creator.

In Isaiah 29 God complains about worship that is half-hearted and hypocritical. The people were offering God stale prayers, insincere praise, empty words, and man-made rituals without even thinking about the meaning. God's heart is not touched by tradition in worship, but by passion and commitment. The Bible says, "These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men."

Worship is not a part of your life; it is your life. Worship is not just for church services. We are told to "worship him continually" and to "praise him from sunrise to sunset." In the Bible people praised God at work, at home, in battle, in jail, and even in bed! Praise should be the first activity when you open your eyes in the morning and the last activity when you close them at night. David said, "I will thank the Lord at all times. My mouth will always praise him."

Every activity can be transformed into an act of worship when you do it for the praise, glory, and pleasure of God. The Bible says, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.' Martin Luther said, "A dairymaid can milk cows to the glory of God."

How is it possible to do everything to the glory of God? By doing everything as if you were doing it for Jesus and by carrying on a continual conversation with him while you do it. The Bible says, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men."

This is the secret to a lifestyle of worship-doing everything as if you were doing it for Jesus. The Message paraphrase says, "Take your everyday, ordinary life your sleeping, eating, going-to work, and walking-around life-and place it before God as an offering. Work becomes worship when you dedicate it to God and perform it with an awareness of his presence.

When I first fell in love with my wife, I thought of her constantly: while eating breakfast, driving to school, attending class, waiting in line at the market, pumping gas-I could not stop thinking about this woman! I often talked to myself about her and thought about all the things I loved about her. This helped me feel close to Kay even though we lived several hundred miles apart and attended different colleges. By constantly thinking of her, I was abiding in her love. This is what real worship is all about -falling in love with Jesus.
