Xerophthalmia is a medical condition where someone's eyes get dry. It's also known simply as "Dry Eye Syndrome". It's quite a common condition among Koreans. At first, symptoms may be mild, such as red, irritated, or itchy eyes. But if it progresses, it can get quite serious. Dry Eye Syndrome can be one of the side effects of getting LASIK surgery. Wearing contacts can also cause the condition, since the lenses absorb tears in the eyes. Other causes include not getting enough Vitamin A, environmental conditions, and not blinking enough. It's also true that people stare into the computer screen for hours and hours each day, and that can be a common cause as well.

안구 건조증이란 눈이 건조해지는 것을 뜻하는 의학 용어입니다. 다른 말로는 간단하게 '드라이 아이 증후군'이라고도 합니다. 이는 한국인들이 흔희 겪는 증상입니다. 처음에는 눈이 충혈되거나, 염증이 생기거나, 가렵거나 하는 등의 가벼운 증상이 나타날 수 있습니다. 그러나 증상이 계속되면 상당히 심각해질 수도 있습니다. 안구 건조증은 라식 수술의 부작용 중 하나로 나타나기도 합니다. 렌즈가 안구의 눈물을 흡수하기 때문에 렌즈를 착용하면 안구 건조증이 발생할 수도 있습니다. 다른 이유로는 비타민 A의 섭취 부족, 환경적 요인, 혹은 눈을 자주 깜빡이지 않는 것을 들 수 있습니다. 또한 사람들이 매일 몇 시간씩 컴퓨터 스크린을 지나치게 쳐다보는 것도 이유 중의 하나가 될 수 있습니다.
