근대화 이전의 한국을 체험하고 싶다면, 경상북도에 위치한 안동하회마을에 가봐야 합니다. 전화나 전기는 들어와 있지만, 이 전통 마을은 조선왕조의 풍습과 문화를 보존하기 위해 힘쓰고 있습니다. 씨족 마을인 이곳에서 조선시대의 건축물, 책, 그리고 오래된 전통을 쉽게 만날 수 있습니다. 다양한 국보를 보유하고 있는 안동하회마을은 유네스코에서 세계문화유산으로 지정하기도 했습니다. 극적인 요소와 주술 의식을 결합한 별신굿 탈놀이는 반드시 봐야 할 볼거리입니다. 장승이라고 불리는 것도 있는데, 이는 악귀들로부터 마을을 지키는 서양의 ‘토템폴’ 같은 것입니다. 하회마을은 서로 겹쳐지는 쉼표 모양, 또는 연꽃 모양을 띠고 있습니다. 하회마을은 풍수지리에 입각해 이런 식으로 만들어졌습니다. 1999년에 영국의 엘리자베스 여왕도 방문했던 안동하회마을은 이렇게 왕족 귀빈들이 방문해도 손색이 없는 곳입니다.

To get a taste of Korea before modernization, one should visit the Andong Hahoe Folk Village in North Gyeongsang Province. Of course there are phones and electricity, but the traditional village aims to preserve the Choseon Dynasty customs and culture. You can find Choseon-style architecture, books, and age-old traditions of the clan-based villages. It was even designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site for featuring various national treasures. The mask dance(별신굿 탈놀이), which mixes drama and shaman rituals is a must-see. There are also what are called jang-seungs, which are totem poles that guard against evil spirits. The village is shaped into two interlocking commas, or the shape of a lotus flower. It was designed this way on purpose to follow feng shui guidelines. It’s safe to say that the village is a stop fit for royalty because even Queen Elizabeth visited the site back in 1999.
