등록금 인상에 대해 이야기해 주세요.



한국의 대학들은 학교 운영에 있어서 재학생들의 등록금에 크게 의존합니다. 서양의 대학들만큼 보조금이나 기부금이 보편화되어 있지 않기 때문입니다.따라서 학생 한 명이 학기당 등록금으로 적게는 500만 원에서 많게는 1,000만 원까지 부담해야 합니다. 게다가 한 해도 거르지 않고 매년 등록금이 인상됩니다. 학자금 대출이 있기는 하지만 금리가 제법 높은 편입니다. 불행히도 장학금이나 보조금 등 다른 재정적 지원을 받기는 쉽지 않습니다. 한국에서 그러한 지원을 받는 학생의 비율은 서양 국가들에 비해 낮습니다. 그렇기 때문에 한국 대학생들은 다른 국가의 대학생들보다 보통 경제적으로 훨씬 더 여유가 없습니다. 많은 학생들이 경제적 부담을 덜기 위해 아르바이트를 하곤 합니다.

Talk about ever-rising college tuition fees.



Korean universities are heavily dependent on collected tuition to stay in operation. Grants and donations aren’t as common as at Western colleges. A student has to pay anywhere from 5 to 10 million won a semester just for tuition. Plus, there are tuition hikes every single year. There are student loans available, but the interest rates are pretty hefty. Unfortunately, other forms of financial aid such as scholarships and grants are hard to come by. The ration of students who receive such aid is much lower in Korea compared to in other Western countries. This is why college students are stereotypically poor even more so in Korea than in other countries. Many of them have to work park-time jobs to ease the financial burden.
