해적들의 선박 납치에 대해 이야기해 주세요.



세계에서 가장 위험한 해역 중 하나가 바로 소말리아 인근 해역입니다. 이 부근에서는 해적들이 기승을 부리고 있습니다. 소말리아 해적들은 몸값을 받아내기 위해 아덴만을 항해하는 화물선들을 납치해 왔습니다. 이 몸값이 만만한 금액이 아닙니다. 2010년 해적들이 벌어들인 몸값이 약 2억 3,800만 달러로 추정되니 말입니다. 최근 들어서 이러한 선박 납치 문제가 더욱 심각해지고 있습니다. 2010년 말 기준 이들이 억류하고 있는 인질은 638명, 피랍된 선박은 아직도 28척에 달합니다. 한국 또한 소말리아 해적들과 분쟁이 있었습니다. 가장 잘 알려진 사건은 올해 초에 일어난 삼호 주얼리호 피랍 사건이었습니다. 한국 정부는 해적과 협상하지 않는다는 강경한 입장을 취하기로 결정했습니다. 이들의 몸값 요구에 굴복하기보다는 구출작전을 감행했습니다. 위험한 작전이었지만 모든 인질을 구출하는 성공을 거두었습니다. 그러나 안타깝게도 석해균 선장은 구출 작전 중 몇 발의 총상을 입었습니다.

Talk about how ships are hijacked by pirates.



Some of the most dangerous waters in the world are off the coast of Somalia. Pirates run rampant in that part of the ocean. Somali pirates have been hijacking cargo ships sailing though the Gulf of Aden for ransom money. These ransoms are no peanuts, demonstrated by the estimated $238 million that they earned in 2010. The hijackings have been worsening in recent years. There are still 28 vessels and 638 hostages being held as of the end of 2010. Korea has had its share of run0ins with Somali pirates. One of the most notable hijacks was the Samho Jewelry at the start of this year. The Korean government decided to take a tougher stance with a no-negotiation policy with the pirates. Rather than giving in to the ransom demands, the government executed a rescue mission. The dangerous mission was successful in rescuing all of the hostages. Unfortunately though, Captain Seok Hae-kyun took several bullets during the rescue operation.
