Toby : Lisa, you just bought your car, right?
Lisa : Yup.
Toby : Do you mind if I ask what kind of car payment you have on that? I’m thinking of getting one just like it.
Lisa : I don’t have a car payment on it. I bought it cash.
Toby : What? I didn’t know you were rolling in the dough like that?!
Lisa : I’m not. And I’m pretty sure you make more than me.
Toby : Then how did you buy it with cash?
Lisa : Simple. Instead of making payments on a loan, I make payments to myself into a special savings account. The interest works for me this way, and when I have enough money built up. I can buy a new car for cash if I want, or just keep it in the bank. Also, this way the car’s an asset, and not a liability.

Toby : Lisa, 차 산 지 얼마 안 됐죠?
Lisa : 그렇죠.
Toby : 차 할부 조건이 어떻게 되는지 물어봐도 될까요? 그런 차로 나도 한 대 사려고 하거든요.
Lisa : 차 할부 아닌데요. 현금으로 샀어요.
Toby : 네? 그 정도로 돈 방석에 앉아 있는지는 몰랐어요!
Lisa : 돈방석이라뇨. Toby 당신이 저보다 연봉이 높을텐데요.
Toby : 그럼 어떻게 차를 현금으로 산 거예요?
Lisa : 쉬워요. 할부금 낸다고 생각하고, 따로 예금 계좌를 만들어서 나 자신에게 할부금을 내 왔거든요. 이자를 내는 게 아니라 받은 거죠. 돈이 충분히 모이면 그 돈으로 새 차를 사도 되고, 그냥 은행에 넣어 두어도 되고, 또 이렇게 차를 사면 차가 부채가 아닌 자산이 된답니다.

Japanese automaker Honda has announced it would eliminate its temporary, part-time workforce of 3,100, while smaller rival Subaru’s parent company warned it would post losses for 2008. Both companies blamed slumping global demand for the moves. Honda said it would let contracts with its entire force of temporary, part-time workers lapse as the end of April. It also said it would cut domestic production to 1.17 million vehicles from 1.31 million, reducing output by about 10 percent. Meanwhile, Fuji Heavy Industries, which makes Subaru, revised its financial projections for FY08 downward from an expected profit to a likely loss of 19 billion yen (≒$190 million)

혼다는 감원, 스바루는 적자
일본 자동차 업체 혼다가 임시직, 비정규직 근로자 3,100명을 감원한다고 발표한 가운데 규모가 더 작은 경쟁 업체 스바루의 모기업은 2008년에 영업 적자를 기록할 것이라고 발표했다. 양사는 모두 전 세계적인 수요 감소를 그 이유로 들었다. 혼다는 오는 4월말 계약이 만료되는 전체 임시직, 비정규직 근로자들과 재계약을 하지 않기로 했다며, 일본 내 생산 대수도 131만대에서 117만대로 10퍼센트 정도 감축한다고 말했다. 한편 스바루를 생산하는 후지 중공업은 2008 회계 연도의 재정 전망을 수익 기대에서 190억 엔(≒ 1억 9천만 달러) 손실 가능성으로 하향 조정했다.
