한국에서 가장 경쟁이 치열한 직업 중에는 국가 고시에 합격해야 하는 것들이 있습니다. 예를 들면 외교관, 변호사, 고위 공무원, 공립학교 교사 등이 있습니다. 외교관이 되려면 외무 고시에 합격해야 합니다. 외무 고시는 미국의 외교관 시험과 비슷합니다. 또한 법조계에 종사하고 싶은 사람이라면 사법 시험에 합격해야 합니다. 미국의 변호사 시험과 비슷하다고 보면 됩니다. 물론 한국이 새로운 로스쿨 체계를 도입하면서 사법 시험은 조만간 사라질 것입니다. 고위 공무원으로 일하고자 하는 이들은 행정 고시라는 치열한 경쟁을 뚫어야 합니다. 주요 국가 고시 중 마지막으로는 임용 고시를 들 수 있습니다. 임용 고시는 공립학교 교사가 되고자 하는 이들을 위한 시험입니다.

Some of the most competitive jobs in Korea require the passing of a state exam. This goes for diplomats, lawyers, senior-level government officials, and public school teachers. If one wants to become a diplomat, he/she has to pass the wae-moo-go-shi. This test is similar to the foreign service exam in the U.S. Anyone who wants to practice law as a profession must pass the sa-shi-hum. Think of the bar exam required for lawyers in the States. This test will die out in the very near future because Korea adopted a new law school system. People who want to work in senior-level government posts go through cutthroat competition to pass the heng-jung-go-shi. One last example of a major state exam is the im-yong-go-shi. This exam is for anyone wanting to become a public school teacher.
